Icon2 Microsoft Renames Windows 8 Service Pack As Windows 10

Yesterday Microsoft unveiled the latest version of its new operating system called Windows 10. Many inside and outside the company used "Threshold" and "Windows 9" interchangeably when discussing the coming Windows release. There have been rumors that Microsoft might opt to christen Threshold as "Windows X," "Windows 365," just plain "Windows" or "Windows One." Because the most recent version of Microsoft's Windows client was named Windows 8, many assumed the next release would be Windows 9. However Microsoft chose to skip Windows 9 and directly go to 10.

This unusual naming has led to a lot of speculation in the media and led to many theories about it. Some say that the name has been inspired by an April Fools joke article by Pete Babb of infoworld.com in April 2013 where he predicted the name Windows 10 Microsoft skips 'too good' Windows 9, jumps to Windows 10 | InfoWorld

Others claim that this is a desperate attempt to mimic Apples naming convention for its OS X operating system. All of Apple's Operating systems are some version of 10 and they never go to 11. The first OS X was version 10.0: "Cheetah" released in 2001 and the latest version is Version 10.10: "Yosemite" released earlier this year. Similarly Microsoft is also planning to name all future Windows versions 10.x.

Apparently this will be the last "major release" of Windows from Microsoft. From now onwards Microsoft is planning to make regular, smaller updates to the Windows 10 codebase, rather than pushing out new major updates years apart.
It is expected that like Apple, Microsoft will release a update every year instead of every few years. Hence users will probably have to pay a smaller amount for their Windows upgrade every year instead of a big amount once every few years.

The Windows 10 core will run on PCs, tablets, Windows Phones and even the Xbox at some point in the future. The user interfaces will be tailored for each type of device, but there will be a common core of operating system elements that will work across all these platforms.

Nor Windows 7 nor 8 its Windows 7 + 8 = 10

To me Windows 10 seems to be a continuation of Windows 8 with a new name. The biggest changes in Windows 10 are that it has more parts of the hated Metro UI removed to make it more useable for keyboard-mouse users. Microsoft had removed some parts of the Metro UI in Windows 8 and 8.1 over time. Microsoft has basically continued this process and Windows 10 is now a cross between Windows 7 and 8. It is neither a horse nor a donkey, but more like a mule. However Microsoft have not given up on the despised Metro UI completely which still comes up in the reborn start menu and possibly other places. Nor have Microsoft completely given up their idea of the all dominating one and only Windows store. Windows 10 will have the ability to run Metro apps in Windowed mode.

You can download a beta preview of Windows 10 from Windows Technical Preview is coming soon - Microsoft Windows and see if it works for you. Personally I am not excited about Windows 8.3 aka Windows 10. I will wait to try it on someone elses machine.
