Re: Is it worth upgrading in 2017

I have a similar system to yours (2500K + Z68 board) and you could say I am in the same quandary as you. Based on my research, something like a R5 1600 + B350 combo would be a step up but for purely gaming purposes it isn't an upgrade that'll blow your mind especially if you've oc'ed your 3570K to 4.2Ghz+ and paired it with 1600mhz+ ram. That setup is capable enough to drive all mid range cards like the 580/1060 in nearly every game and based on what I've read even a 1070. You would only notice a significant difference if you're using a high end GPU or doing cpu intensive tasks other than gaming with your system.

Since gaming's your main priority, a 1070 or a 480/580 + Freesync monitor combo depending on which team you prefer would be what I would look at. Which card do you currently have? Also, no need to change your PSU. Unless I am mistaken, its a quality unit that's good enough for just about any single GPU on the market.

Re: Is it worth upgrading in 2017

A 2500K at 4.4GHz can apparently handle a GTX 1080 as well if not better than a R3 1200/R5 1400.

Like I said, you would have to go for at least a R5 1600 for it to be an upgrade and even then you probably won't see a significant increase in gaming performance going by the data in this video. Btw, ram speed matters. If you can get your ram up to 1866/2133, it will make a difference.

Yeah the GPU market is still messed up. Hopefully it gets back to normal soon.

Re: Is it worth upgrading in 2017

what resolution are you gaming on ?
Your processor is still more than enough for the gpu you are running
save your money for a GPU upgrade if possible assuming you wanna game at higher than 1080p res

some interesting benchmarks above

I used an i3 2100 for ages and it saw a few GPU changes. My 2500K at 4.2GHz is enough for my 470. Hell I was a bit surprised to find out it can handle a 1080 at 4.4GHz as well or even slightly better than an R5 1400 at 4GHz which is a chip I was looking at. Really want to get a 1070 now.

If you're using an unlocked Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge part, the gains simply aren't there for most users in terms of pure gaming to justify an upgrade. Now if you have an FX chip and want to get something more powerful than a 1060/580, then you may want to upgrade though.

same here but cant justify the price or upgrade since my monitor resolution is 2048x1152 and the gtx 970 is more than happy at that res still

Yup, GPU prices are still screwed up even after mining's dead. Yeah my 470 does a great job at 1080p in just about everything but start modding Skyrim extensively and it can bring a 470/970@1080p to its knees and make it weep in no time. That's the primary reason why I want to get a 1070.

2048x1152? Which monitor do you have?

Ah nice. Got a cheapo BenQ G2220HD that's still going after 6 years. If I can't get a 1070, then I'll probably buy a LG freesync monitor and pair it with my 470.

Me too have the same monitor and still going good even after 6 year, but now planning to upgrade to 1440p.
