Wolfenstein Review
Wolfenstein Review
Date: 23-09-09
Topic: Reviews & Previews
Author: Akshay Singh

Pros:
-Some freaky weaponry and special abilities at the player’s disposal. -Gorgeous visuals which make the town of Isenstadt look believable. -Haven for destruction, since Nazis liked to keep a lot of exploding barrels and wooden boxes.

Cons:
-At 8 hours long, the campaign leaves a lot to be desired. -AI could use some fine tuning. -Upgrading options solely dependent on Gold collection. New players might completely ignore the option affecting the end result and end up missing out on what really Wolfenstein has to offer.

Wolfenstein Review

Then and Now

There are some things in this world that are known to a person irrespective of the fact, that he or she has no interest in it. Some things just deserve ‘that’ attention.

You don’t need to be a golfer to know about Tiger Woods. You don’t need to be a tennis fan to know about Pete Sampras or Roger Federer and you definitely don’t need to be an avid first person shooter player to know about 'Wolfenstein 3D', which has been credited for defining and giving face to the genre back in ‘92. However, Wolfenstein only saw a sequel in 2001 and between now and then we have seen an innumerable amount of franchises that have made a name for themselves with a huge fan following.

So in this era, with the likes of 'Call of Duty', 'Battlefield' or 'Half-Life', where many first person shooters drown in this sea of competition. Will the game that started it all be able to hold a candle in front of its competition that undeniably took inspiration from it in the first place?

Wolfenstein finally makes a comeback after eight long years of silence and sports an extreme makeover from its previous versions. Even though we still play the ever so valiant Nazi slaying protagonist ‘B.J’ Blazkowicz who puts Bollywood heroes to shame with his antics of unreal heroism all over Nazi Germany. What changes here is the excessive use of the supernatural theme that clouds the entire game giving it a very sci-fi, fantasy look which may or may not strike a chord with gamers today.

At the outset, Wolfenstein undoubtedly seems like a linear World War II shooter that we have experienced time and time again but few minutes into the game, the whole perspective changes because of the drastic changes made to the age-old formula of linearity that has been used since the days of old-school shooters.

We start off with a chimerical introduction which takes place on a Nazi warship on which B.J discovers the ‘Thule Medallion’ which gives him special abilities. Upon reporting this object to the OSA – Office of Secret Action, they discover that Nazi’s Paranormal Division is up to no good (again) in a Nazi occupied town of Isenstadt where they have discovered the path to an alternate dimension called ‘The Veil’ which holds the power of the Black Sun. If harnessed properly, it can provide unprecedented source of energy to the Third Reich. It is B.J’s duty to thwart Third Reich’s evil plan, yet again, and all by himself. Lucky us!

Re: Wolfenstein Review

The game's value is the multiplayer..especially the checkpoint missions. Single Player is kinda disappointing at first but once you start it...you'll end up finishing it for sure. Unfortunately there is nothing to come back for in Single Player. I'd give this game 7.5/10. Get this one if you've played the previous versions...If you haven't then give it a miss it's nothing great...better off with Quake 4/Crysis/ UT series.
