In window rt you can't run application like .exe file....
Window rt is one type of mobile os....
If your father main concern is too read file like ppt and pdf,Microsoft office also coming for windows rt...

Surface is good tablet with accessories like built in keyboard in cover...

For office stuff it will be a very good alternative but as has been mentioned it won't run all windows 8 apps. Also the processor is tegra3 which is getting sort of old now. I would suggest you wait a bit and see how app support shapes up.

Re: Windows Surface Tablet

If your father wants to do official work on it then he will have to buy an additional licence of MS Office. Windows Surface RT will come with a free home edition of Office 2013 but it cant be used for official work. Also It will officially only run software available through the Windows Store or included in Windows RT. Most of these apps are not as god as full desktop apps and are not to everyone's taste.

Lastly, everyone doesn't like the Windows 8 UI so try it out before buying it as there is no way that you can install Windows 7 on it if you dont like it.

That is utterly BS, please do not do False propaganda in Help Threads. Microsoft has not made any such statement. A website has looked into the license agreement and created a news articles out of it for Web Hits. Not everything in license agreement is meant to be followed or in real world being applied.

@OP, I would say if your father needs a laptop replacement then he should look into Surface Pro.

It is not false propaganda. The Office Home & Student 2013 RT Preview included in the Surface RT tablet is neither free for commercial use nor final. If you see Microsoft's page over here Office Home & Student RT Preview - Office.com Then it clearly states that :

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed this was the case in an e-mailed statement to ZDNet:

"While Office Home & Student 2013 RT Preview and the final edition are not designed for commercial, nonprofit, or revenue-generating activities as sold, organizations do have options for using the applications commercially – including purchasing commercial use rights or licensing any edition of the new Office with commercial use rights.”

The current edition is something like beta of thge Office Home and Student 2010 is licensed which is only for "non-commercial use for members of your household." I know that many companies even in India dont allow this to be used for official work. I recall that @Prash's company told him not to use the home edition for official work. This could also be a problem for the OP's father and he should know about this.

Also Windows surface cant be called a laptop because it cant be used comfortably on a lap or any other soft surface. It requires a flat and hard surface to remain stable unlike a traditional laptop.

hmmm....makes sense. If its used in a decently sized organisation which works with Windows system, then they would have the volume licensing anyways. In any case Microsoft is not out there stopping common people to use Office on Surface RT for commercial purpose. Microsofts intention is to stop companies to buy Surface RT's and giving them to all their employees afterall, volume licensing of Windows/Office in corporates is a major earner for Microsoft. (Case in point, how many people in India purchase Windows OS/Office for their home)

And sorry for the earlier outburst but even then, anyone can use Office for their official work on Surface RT, there is no way Microsoft can stop that, however companies may not allow employees to connect such devices to their domain (thats how record is kept of how many licenses of different application are being used in the company) since then the Company will be in breach of licensing agreement with Microsoft.

Edit : Oh btw all of the above is only IMO, out of my extensive experience in Networks and being a Business Analyst.

Microsoft cant stop all people and even commercial organisations from using pirated windows on their computers. A lot of people and companies use pirated MS Office for their work and go unnoticed. Just because "Microsoft cant stop that" wont mean that you are not in breach of licence conditions. However some companies, especially whose work is in US/Europe do take licence issues very seriously and this could be problematic for them. So just be aware of this while recommending Surface for commercial use.

Even Indian companies take licensing issue very seriously and its no different than how its taken in US/Europe simply because the main work always come from US or Europe, so they have to be always compliant to US/EU laws (atleast the big MNCs). And I have already told in my above post how and why the licensing breach can be caught but if an official file which is to be commercially used is being edited in Surface RT at home and the Tablet being never brought into companies domain, then NO COMPANY be it in US/Europe or India would ever have any problem. And as I said in my above post even Microsoft will not try to stop such usage or is looking to stop

Also please do not argue just for the sake of argument.

Wait for Windows Pro Surafce. It will be out in another three months. By which time you would also know the experience with Surface RT.

I am also waiting to get my hand on Windows Surface Pro. Fed up of lugging around the heavy Laptop.

Re: Windows Surface Tablet

If you wait for sometime then you can have the added advantage of a lower price. I expect prices to fall sharply after its launch as I dont expect it to sell well at this price and Microsoft may start to panic by December.

And they price the products at really exorbitant prices. You can import one yourself at very cheap prices compared to theirs.
