Windows 7 or Windows 8 !

Hi !

I just upgraded my system (see my siggy) and am looking for an OS.
Currently I have Win 7 home basic (oem pack sourced from ma cousin - no license) and I need to make the decision fast.

My main use would be 3d design and gaming.
yes, I have tried win 8 dev preview and wan't very impressed but they say they have improved it in the 8.1 update.
So, Windows 8.1 should be good for me, right ?

Also, where to buy the OS ?
In ebay.in, I see a lot of offers with 2k, 5k etc vs MS's 10k price tag in their website.

BTW, I want to play old games..like HL2, FarCry, BF1942 etc. Is it possible in win 8 ?

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8 !

Both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 have their plus and minus points. I tested both of them and while I feel more at ease with Windows 7, I feel Windows 8.1 in general feels snappier.

But before you use it, make sure you are well acquainted with the quirks Microsoft has included with 8.1. I faced one where in Windows 8.1 some USB drives are shown as permanent drives

Yeah, windows 8 was really fast (dev preview) but I didn't had much time to actually use it.

BTW, what about the offers in ebay.in ?

Also, anyone using Mandriva Linux here ?
How is the new 2013 version ?

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8 !

Either one will get the job done for you.
W8.1 would be futureproof, in the sense that it would get more support from devs (games like Halo Spartan Assault, etc) & MS.

And you can contact our fellow member @satanssj93 aka Swapnil for deals on W8.

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8 !

I'd recommend 8.1 unless you hate anything Metro. 8 is pretty fast as a OS including boot up and down times.

Thanks guys for your opinion

I don't hate metro UI but I like the old start screen more. @satanssj93
Affirmative !

I'll ask the latter question in the Open Source sub forum.

I hate metro with a passion!

But there is a software (like prateek said) which can get rid of metro and bring back the start menu, with a few alterations win 8 can be perfectly usable but out of the box i hate it.
Oh i read 8.1 brings back the start button which when clicked upon takes you to the metro ui lol.

Is it the good old win7 kinda start menu? I read it's a tiled menu. Anyway that's just me, OP has no problems with Metro

I think win 8 is a better option nonetheless as long as the 3d software he needs is compatible.
System Builder or Upgrade version is the question now.

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8 !

As a Programmer found Windows 8 Pro faster than Win 7 Pro, not only in boot-up or shutdown time, but also in compiling and building huge software packages. I use Pokki in windows 8 for all start menu needs.

Tried Win 8.1 feels same as 8 but i still miss start menu.. and also some hardware and anti virus issue in 8.1
