Urgent APC UPS Help - Need to Buy Tomorrow (Bangalore)

Hello [E]onians,

I have a weird problem. In my area (South-East Bangalore) the power keeps going on an off intermittently. Sometimes every 5 mins the power goes on and off for 1-2 minutes. The 1-2 minutes delay is due to backup generators kicking in. Therefore I need backup for very short period for eg. 30 seconds to 2 minutes before the power backup generators kick-in.

I have called up EVER RICH TECHNOLOGIES in BTM Layout and those guys are quoting Rs.4100 for APC 1KVA UPS. They didn't tell me the model. Is the price correct?

I have made the following selection but it's very confusing.

  1. APC Smart-UPS RT 1000VA 230V
  2. APC Smart-UPS RC 1000VA 230V Harsh Environment
  3. APC Smart-UPS 1000VA USB & Serial 230V
  4. APC Smart-UPS 750VA USB & Serial 230V
  5. APC Smart-UPS SC 1000VA 230V - 2U Rackmount/Tower
  6. APC Back-UPS RS, 1000VA, 230V, INDIA

UPS Selector on the APC site returned the below 3 options:-

  1. APC Smart-UPS RT 48V Battery Pack
  2. APC Smart-UPS RT 1000VA 230V No Batteries
  3. APC Smart-UPS RT 1000VA 230V

My config (Not sure what is the actual load created by the system during normal use):-
  • Proc - Intel C2D E6600
  • Motherboard - P5N32 E SLI
  • HDD - 5 x (total of 2.5TB all SATA)
  • Opt Drive - 1 x PATA DVD RW
  • GPU - 2 x GTS 250 512MB
  • RAM - 2 x 2GB OCZ XTC Platinum
  • Fans - 4 x Chassis fans (80mm - 120mm)
  • Monitor - 1 x Samsung 19" LCD (940BW)
  • Audio - 1 x Logitech X540 5.1 Speakers
  • SMPS - Glacial Power GP-AL650AA (650W)

Folks who are already using APC UPS please provide valuable inputs & suggestions.

4.1k for APC 1kVA is pretty decent price imo but for your needs even 650VA is enough

Are u sure as the 650VA is rated for 390W output? PSU load calculator tells me that my system will require 479W to sustain. I have also not included the Monitor & Speakers in that.

Hi fellow Erodovian and guess BTMian

your PSU i.e. Glacial Power GP-AL650AA (650W) needs a 1000va ups from APC else it won't be of any use.
The power rated of the ups must be >= smps rated.
i have a cx430 and need a APC 800VA which supports 550W(wanted 550VX first).

Incase you go for a lesser one, your problem won't be solved..
Any time your SMPS will consume > 390W(650va) it won't run on backup but switch off...and start again..
Pay 7k...for the safety of the rest of your equipments i would say and you'll get awesome APC power chute for checking on your power requirement also... Go for APC only.. other brands can't be trusted with the power.

cheers

Considering during idle condition you system consumes 200w power and your psu has an efficiency of say 70% Then it would drain
0.7 x 200 + 200w AC power = 340w (from AC mains in this case from UPS)

For a UPS iirc we should assume 60% PF while converting the VA into watts ie. For 650VA it wouldbe 390W

So it should be enough imo.

i'm not sure of the calculations... to supply 200W @ 70 % eff, u the power drained will be .7* X = 200
so x=200/.7=285.7W will b e drained

btw just found this if it helps ya

APC Back-UPS 1100, 230V,BR1100CI-IN

Hello friends, Thanks a lot for the inputs. I checked [E] from my phone today but cudnt respond. Just returned home. This afternoon I had gone to SP Road and bought the BR1100CI-IN(RS1100VA) & a TS BA II PLUS™ calculator from Golchha Computers for 6.5K (with credit card). Surprisingly for me unlike Chandni Chowk Market in Kolkata (equivalent of SP Road) they didn't charge the 2% extra for credit card.

What I liked about Golchha Computers is that the owner is very professional and that he had ready stock for both the items. They have good stock.

The UPS is easy to setup. Pretty much out of the box plug and play. Before you setup the UPS you have to connect the Red negative line (see the pics below) to the battery by opening the battery which I found a bit clumsy to perform. The rest was pure awesomeness. I had a 600VA Double Battery Microtek for my GF's (now wife) computer long time back which would never be able to pull the 19" CRT monitor along with 128MB FX5600 Ultra back in circa 2005's but this APC really means business. Just out of the box I got a taste of what it's made up off. Hardly 1 hour after setup the weather got really bad in Bangalore and the power started fluctuating and boy o boy the UPS kept the PC running without any issues with speakers, LCD, wifi modem, etc. on.

Overall
- Was not looking for fancy stuff. Just needed sufficient power backup for all equipment until backup generators kicked in & during voltage fluctuation. Satisfied with what I paid for. Would recommend this product.

The Red cable (-) line shown in the below pic is disconnected out of the box. You have to take out the batteries then connect it before setting up the UPS.

I connected all the items to the surge protector and then connected the surge protector to the UPS. Is that safe and okay thing to do?

Re: Urgent APC UPS Help - Need to Buy Tomorrow (Bangalore)

Congrats man!!!
Now download this Software / Firmware

there will be a cable with the UPS which has one end as USB and the other as LAN.
Connect the USB end to the System and the other end to the UPS.

Then you can keep track of the power being utilized.
Best part is you lappy like power options .. power saver/ balanced / high performance
And you can also control the time of remaining when it starts beeping irritatingly
set it to 5 mins and guess you'll never hear the 'too too' again plus it'll make you guilty by saying how much carbon you
are emitting and how many trees will be needed to absorb that it also logs the power failures and the fluctuations
Cheers

Thanks man.

I don't think I can install that software on my UPS. That works with the 1KVA model.

Also the one you posted and the one which I bought is the same one. The pic is of the old model. The manuals also have the older pics.

Dude i'm using the S/W with RS 800 which is a 800 VA one...There is no bar on S/W compatibility depending on VAs.
Runs with any APC ups. Anyways however you like it.
