Re: Upgrade from 8400gs

You cant upgrade to HD5450 without upgrading your SMPS as well. The HD5450 consumes about 170 watts on load which you current SMPS wont be able to handle. Also your CPU and RAM will bottleneck the performance of the card even if you upgrade.

I suggest you upgrade your whole PC if you can or make do with your current PC for the time being.

170W for graphics card alone? i checked online and it consumes 19W underload compared to 8400gs which consumes 40W

Re: Upgrade from 8400gs

Sorry, I meant the system will consume about 170w Radeon HD 5450 review - Setup | Noise | Power consumption | Heat levels I somehow seem to have mixed that with the card consumes 170w ... The summer heat must be getting to me. So you current SMPS should be able to handle the card.

Still I think the benefits of this upgrade will be limited because of CPU/RAM bottlenecks. I would recommend a full system upgrade.

Re: Upgrade from 8400gs

Your CPU is quite old & it will bottleneck your GPU (I had the same cpu which bottleneck my old 4650 in some new games like COD series ,Far cry 2,3, Crysis 2, BF3 in lowest settings )
So you should 1st upgrade your CPU to any AMD dual core(AMD Athlon II X2/X3 will be cheaper & more VFM than intel) & your psu is okay to run 5450 like cards

i will not play the games u mentioned, i only play cs 1.6 and some AOE 2 HD. I experience fps drops with my current setup so i decided to upgrade my GPU. Would it be better if i buy i replace my p4 with a Core 2 duo E4400. I saw someone selling that on market.

Yes it will be an improvement of leaps and bounds.

Because Ghz only just denotes the number of cycles per second (clock rate), how much data, a particular cpu can process in each cycle, finally defines the performance. Or in otherwords, its the architecture of the CPU which is important. So each generation of CPU brings in these architectural changes which lets them perform better than the previous CPU. You can always compare CPU M/Ghz in a particular generation but its foolish to compare the M/G hz of different generation of CPUs.

Do you think that your CPU is almost close to the CPU of todays because they have almost the same clock rate? Without going into any reviews, my guess is that todays CPU would be atleast 5000% (50 times) faster than your CPU,

Just for clarification even E4400 is like 6 years old. P4 had a lot of CPU even at same Mhz. Anyway you can let us know the codename of the CPU? (use CPUz)
