Is there any difference between the branded HDMI cables and the el chepo ones?

Like the title says.

I have seen people paying as much as $50 for HDMI cables whereas the same exact stuff (read, HDMI cable) is available for $5 at some places (or there about.)

Does it actually make a difference, considering it is a digital standard?

Regards,
Karan

Some of it is hype while some of it matters. Mostly the prices are higher because of better material, build quality and length etc.

For example, recently I went to NP to buy DVI-D. The best I found was selling for Rs 200 but its build quality was very bad. No doubt it would have served my purpose but I would have gladly preferred a better cable even at the cost of Rs 200 more.

Re: Is there any difference between the branded HDMI cables and the el chepo ones?

^^The standards (for signal loss/quality etc) are not particularly stringent.

HDMI is simply a standard for combined Video+Audio streams. That's really it. There's some limits to signal attenuation and quality but those barely impact consumer cables/connectors.

Bottom line: Yes. More reputed manufacturers (Belkin/Apple etc) can be expected to deliver marginally better quality, but a DEFINITE increase in lifespan and long term signal degradation.
Sometimes the difference is perceptible, sometimes not.

Re: Is there any difference between the branded HDMI cables and the el chepo ones?

^^The question is the BRAND, not the PRICE.

It just so happens that branded ones tend to be more expensive
But I'd pick an expensive, shielded, gold/silver connector blah, blah, blah cable over a regular NP cable any day.

^^^and I would not mind testing the NP cables first and then if they dont deliver upto my expectations look for branded ones.

Re: Is there any difference between the branded HDMI cables and the el chepo ones?

for me i never had to choose as i use the free cable that came with my Xbox 360 elite with my ps3 and regular component for my 360.But i guess build quality definitely plays a role.Like teh gold plated shielded heeber jeebers make a difference i guess

+1 for monoprice

the thing to look for in Hdmi cables is length and gauge.
if u buy a longer cable( eg 3m ) then would better go for something like 22/24G rather than the cheaper 24G
