Need Help: Unknown Virus: Dfr.exe

Hi,

I've been using Avast for about a year. Yesterday, after being persistently annoyed by reminders to register, I registered it.
About half an hour later, the system restarted to a black screen, with an error: "Error reading/writing to drive". My friend who was using the system at the time followed the prompts, and as a result, a software which I think was a trojan, got installed.

This software then checked the HDD and proclaimed that it was in a critical state, with 24% reliability/integrity, and that these issues could be solved upon purchase of the full version. Additionally, I found that all my hard drives were empty, the start menu had no programs, the jump lists etc were gone, and all the restore points had been deleted.

Thinking it to be a virus of some sort, I ran mozilla from the run and downloaded a couple of HDD checking s/w. These reported, along with CHKDSK, that the HDD was fine.
I then checked the folder options and found that it was set to 'Don't show hidden files' and that all the files were actually hidden. I disabled this and the files were visble once again.
I also narrowed down the source of this issue to a file called dfr.exe and removed it from startup. This seems to have resolved the issue but I still don't have access to my start menu, and the system admin tools seem to have their shortcuts deleted, though i can still run them from the run prompt.
Is there any way to fix this? Additionally, some files seem to have become inaccessible due to security permissions, and when I try to change thta, I get an access denied error message.

try dr.web cureit, its a stand alone scanner.

Or best, make hard drive portable and install on another safe system for scanning.

I just paid 900 bucks to buy 1 yr license of kaspersky for the same. better peace of mind. Earlier had avast, comodo internet security and what not running together.

How about 'System Restore' to an earlier date when everything was working fine ?
But first check when was the latest System Restore point created.

try disabling system restore..
then run this

@Xanan, you should have given a call tome there and then..
try doing what Sumon says, but I think even after that..
visit here and do a complete scan, it will take time but is the most effective way of getting system back into action !!
