The Rise & Fall of the Mega Online Store: Flipkart

The problem with Flipkart is that it is NOT the online retailer we had all come to love and believe in. When they maintained their own inventory, it was easy to trust them, but now with a marketplace model, that simply can't be the case.

Flipkart started out with the ambitious, unsaid goal of being the Amazon.com of India. Initially, they showed a major fervour in growth, with the simple aim that their customers had to be happy. Towards this, they invested heavily in warehouses, creating an inventory, introducing a Cash on Delivery system and even a “no questions asked” return policy. This helped build the company’s reputation as one of India’s biggest and possibly best retailers, but someone had to ask the important questions. How in the name of GOD were they able to offer insane discounted deals? “30% off on that Xbox 360 title? Oh my god yes! 60% off on that Logitech gaming mouse? Holy crap!” Not to mention everything almost always being in stock. There was no way Flipkart was making money off an operation like this.

The losses continued and eventually, Flipkart’s business model changed. From being an online retailer, they went to becoming an online marketplace. The difference, in case you’re wondering, is that they went from being the “seller” to being the “broker.” Now if you place an order on Flipkart.com, you are not technically buying from them, but from one of their many “sellers,” with Flipkart’s role in the entire transaction being that of an intermediately. They handle the ordering and delivering of the said product, nothing more. This is where sh*t gets all kinds of messed up.

Ws retail is best.... delivery in a single day.

Dont order other than ws retail.ws retail is surely 100-200 bucks costly but their awesome service makes up to it.

Nope Ws retail is comparatively cheaper... And has free shipping.. Also Ws retail isn't owned by flipkart anymore.. Also when flipkart owned WS retail , there was a 1-2 days delivery time , but now minimum is 2-3 days..and most items i ordered reached me in minimum 5-8 days, which is just ok , not excellent...

Re: The Rise & Fall of the Mega Online Store: Flipkart

^Yes , a third party owns WS Retail now...and thik takeover has happned 3-5 months ago....

So do not expect "Flipkart" standard service from WSRETAIL.

good thing is WSRETAIL is now providing competitive prices compared to the pathetic prices they provided when it was owned by Flipkart...Also when flipkart owned WS retail , there was a 1-2 days delivery time , but now minimum is 2-3 days and 5-6 ,7-8 days..and most items i ordered reached me in minimum 5-8 days, which is just ok , not excellent...

Re: The Rise & Fall of the Mega Online Store: Flipkart

It seems that he original author of that article seem to have little understanding of the issues surrounding Flipkart and why the changes have come about. If you understand that then things are not so surprising.

1. Flipkart.com took funds from international venture capitalists from 2009-2012.
2. Taking foreign funds to fund a domestic online retailing business was/is against Indian law and violated FDI rules.
3. An investigation if underway to ascertain if/what rules Flipkart flouted to fund their business. Punitive action/penalties will probably be imposed on Flipkart for this.
4. To circumvent the FDI restrictions in order to get more funding and to evade percecution Flipkart changed its business model in 2012.
5. Now filpkart poses as in intermediary between the buyer and seller and not as a direct seller. The now sell via proxy through WS Retail. There are other sellers listed for namesake but mostly you will be buying from WS Retail only.
6. If you stick to WS retail (Flipkart via proxy) then you will probably get the usual good Filpkart service. If you buy through other sellers youare taking a risk and its as good as buying from someone from ebay.in.

WS Retail was sold by flipkart to someone ,will post link as soon as i get it.

WS Retail sucks as of now...i have many cancelled orders too ....which happen 7-8 days after ordering ...and once even after product was shipped via fedex.(the same order had 2 other items shipped via fedex to mumbai from delhi...the third product was shipped , and then third product order was cancelled saying cannot deliver) i mean WTF !
