A question about Ubuntu 7.10 and web development!

Hi people,

I am setting up a development environment inside VMware and using Ubuntu 7.10 as platform.

What basically I intend to do is use:

- Zend Studio (for PHP development, can you recommend any other better Open source alternative?, using trial version of Zend ATM.)
- PHP 5.2
- MySQL 5
- Apache2.2

However, with the default environment setup, it becomes a PITA to actually do development.... how do I go about it? For example, where should I optimally put my .php files so that I can use the editor (which ever it is) to edit then and see the results? Slightly confused here....

#all suggestions welcome.

Regards,
Karan

Dont know the answer to your specifc query on setup but...

I thought LAMP was an integrated offering in most distros now.

Maybe thats only in the enterprise versions?

Yes, LAMP is a accepted install set in Ubuntu 7.10 as well.

A simple:

Code:
sudo tasksel install lamp-server
... will do the trick, but I was confused on the exact configuration of the development environment. Is there a accepted "BEST" PHP editing environment for Linux?

Waiting for comments.

One thing you can do is configure apache to host user sites. You can get the info easily through google. Once done, you can create a folder called 'webstart' or similar in your home folder and use that as wwwroot. Basically that is where you place all the php files.

ex: if your username is kid0m4n, your url could be something like http : // localhost or IP/~kid0m4n
- This will be easier for dev work without much hassle of permissions.

By default it would be somewhere like /var/www/*** - *** depends on different things. - this will be your http : // localhost or IP /

Regd IDE/Editor - I dont like bulky ones with all uber features. I like editors like Scite. I use a bit improved editor which I developed few years back for all dev needs (basically have got used to it).

If you like the biggies, you can try webtools package for eclipse, Zend that you have and ActiveState's Komodo

i have no idea abt Zend but if u want to do development in PHP, u can use any IDE like Eclipse, KDevelop etc. since php is not compiled u just need to write the php code and view the results in a browser.

^ I edited my orig post regarding editors. Maybe you should have a look at couple of them. There are quite a few Editors/IDEs for such purposes from ultra lite ones to pure bloatwares.
