Programmers: Before you turn 40, get a plan B.

I was reading this article below.

Programmers: Before you turn 40, get a plan B Software++

I had earlier read about how short is the shelf life of a programmer. At the rate of new languages creeping in and new hardware upgrades coming in, the programmer himself becomes obsolete unless he keeps learning new things. Some languages may seem immortal, but everything will lose value eventually.

India became an IT hub because the education syllabus itself was obsolete and hence maintenance projects perfectly suited themselves to the freshly graduated students.

Also, life may seem smooth now, but going forward the road may eventually lead nowhere.

So whats your Plan B. I have none at the moment.

That is an esoteric field. How about Database Architecture. And the glorious MBA is also there.

Wow, you made me think man.
Am I in wrong field?
Or should I change to web development or something with the bling involved?
Seriously I do not know as of yet.
But I am planning to change to uncharted waters soon .

^ bling is actually the fastest changing stuff.
get low. as low as possible. kernel dev, for instance is the safest s/w work out there. the language remains the same and nobody has the balls to give you shit.

Re: Programmers: Before you turn 40, get a plan B.

I agree rpm but problem is I am already working on kernel .
And I was wondering if this applies to me too?

But I have mood to shift to hypervisor dev work withing my organisation within coming years. Perhaps a change in technology within kernel itself will be a better proposition?

How long can I sustain this, I do not know honestly.

Hypervisor - that is a hot field.

I'm an Oracle Developer and was considering SAP/Oracle Apps to move ahead.

I'm pretty confused.

Yes it is hot but only problem is - It is tough as hell, atleast for me.

I do not feel shame to admit that I suck totally at writing a hypervisor using provided paravirt ops .

As long as I can keep the interest going, I ll go. Else perhaps some application development somewhere... sigh.

Re: Programmers: Before you turn 40, get a plan B.

problem with frontends is that you get lame problems to solve. move the label here, align the textbox and sh1t of that sort. get into SOA/ROA/cloud computing arch if kernels are an issue. m in soa.

There is a lot of stuff in app dev which needs attention.
Yes you are right, perhaps a P2P filesystem for cloud computing will be best bet ...

For SOA/ROA etc, do you need to know Java ?

Re: Programmers: Before you turn 40, get a plan B.

implementation-obviously yes.
10k ft. level architecture-somewhat.
20k ft. level archtitecture-no.

SOA is basically a concept. you design and implement your web based services/applications to follow this model.

In my org there are people who have been working on SAS (the lang i work upon) from the last 30 years. I guess I am good to go for another 5 years, after that I'll anyway move into people management roles.
