Icon2 Is It Possible to Run a R9 280x or Any Other 250watt Card on Corsair VX450(40 Amp)

As the thread says,
I want to know if it is possible to run a R9 280x on a VX450 PSU?

Corsair VX 450 is rated at 33 amp at+12v rail (396 watts)
but is in actuality a 550 watt PSU with more than 40+ amps on +12v, as shown/tested on Hardwaresecrets, all the while maintaining clean power and 80+ efficiency

The rest of the hardware is

Core I5 4440 (84)
4xDDR3 Ram sticks
1xSata 3 HDD

nop...even though VX450 can actually supply 550W its recommended not to push the PSU to its limit...and 80% efficiency is best provided when the load is between 60-70%

How old is your PSU ? Since its EOL product , it still can power R9 280x depending on psu components ageing ( mainly capacitor ). You'll be more than fine, just remember not to push your luck by overclocking the gpu as it may draw more current from your +12V rails more than specified and it may get damaged. My brother is using Seasonic SS400BT (400w) psu with GTX 670 on full hd and its going strong.
To give you a rough idea, my setup consumes 250-310W on full load. So your's will be fine.

You'll get an idea of subjective gpu consumption from this link : MSI Radeon R9-280X TwinFrozr Gaming OC review - Hardware setup | Power consumption

Check the total consumption, it'll be lower than your setup.

Also, check the load tests of your PSU. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/artic...y-Review/540/7

Thanks for the comprehensive reply mate!
my PSU is about 3 years old now, although used very sparingly.
roughly 3 hours per day i.e 3000-4000 hours at most, so how much capacitor aging is that gonna be?
If I'm not mistaken the MTBF was about 10,000 or 100,000 hours acc to specs.

The PSU is rated by corsair to provide around 33 amps on 12v and 40+ amps unofficially. so that means a 30 amp load on the setup is no problem right?

although my only concern is it comes only with a single 6xpin PCIe Power connector,
if I do use a molex 2x6pin or 2x8 pin converter will it contaminate the quality of power being suplied to the GPU or even hamper its performance/longevity??
considering the 12v does hold up under the load that is.

Re: Is It Possible to Run a R9 280x or Any Other 250watt Card on Corsair VX450(40 Amp

A VX450 would be cutting it real close.
Even a small burn-in testrun on FurMark (cause huge peaks in power consumption) or even a little bit of OC would be damn risky, and completely blow up your PSU.
Also, you can expect shutdows, BSODs, choppy FPS etc. in intense long time gaming sessions, like in FC3, Crysis 3, etc.

Your PSU is already 3 yrs old, and how much max power it can supply under full load, is also a questionable thing now.
And it's not suggested to run a PSU close to it's full capacity.
PSUs work best and last longest when they have headroom. There is no set rule but 20% seems to be the generally accepted figure.

Plus it dosen't have enough power connections, and using those adapters are a risk, as you'd be pulling much through what they designed for.
I wouldn't suggest it.

Think long term - get a new PSU, and be on the safer side, than risking your components like that.

Yeah, 3 yrs old VX450 might be like pushing its limits. Since realandr3cys mentioned that you might get bsod, freezing, choppy fps, i second to that. Still the psu working at <80% of its capacity won't sweat much ( ~70-80% of load in your case ), but may have short life expectancy, and you'll never know when it's nearing to end. Also said in above post , using external power adapters is risky and not recommended. You can game but in the meantime, save bucks to get at least a 500+ unit with 2x8 pin connectors as soon as you can. You won't risk your hard earned money on a psu which costs 10% of their graphic card's worth.

VX450 is a budget PSU which can only run GTX660 or HD7850 type of cards which have a single Pci-e power connector.

You'll be pushing the PSU to its limits if you will be running r9 280x.

And if even if you make it run forget overclocking of even 1%
