Is Online Shopping in India Still a Dicey Business?

Do you really feel secure while shopping online from Indian websites? We've all run into one thing or the other, not just with Indian but International sellers as well. Is there something about Online shopping from Indian websites that irks you?

well can buy stuff tat does not change dimensions like electronic stuffs.. but not apparels .. you order for 8 size shoes but when u get it most of the time its going to be tight, then its a hassle to change the product esp in India.

also Wat JD mentioned has a point esp "Difference between product displayed and actual product that arrives."

Re: Is Online Shopping in India Still a Dicey Business?

my experience is not so good...
fern n petals : they show something else n u get something else...go to there shop n u get the same thing at half the price.
ebay : ordered a game n u get pirated CDs

almost (99.9%) all the websites have higher price than street price.

I voted Yes.

It's no longer financially unsecure but it's the whole experience that leaves a sour taste in your mouth. Sadly, we're still far from seeing Indian equivalents of Amazon or Newegg.

The only website I feel comfortable shopping at is eBay and ironically, that's not exactly desi

My mother buys from homeshop18 (bleh) indiatimes etc. They are good but nothing is better than ebay when it comes to customer service. Ofcourse whenever buying one must use common sense and don't believe in every shit the sellers say.

This is the gospel truth. Though the eBay discount vouchers come in handy.

For now eBay rocks. But there's nothing like newegg in India. Also I think people in India think too much before buying online. People here prefer to buy locally only.

Re: Is Online Shopping in India Still a Dicey Business?

When I came back to India, after staying in US for 4 years, I was glad that online shopping was coming up in a big way. I was a big online shopper in US, so I took to online shopping instantly. At that time ebay.in was bazee. com. When Bazee was taken over by ebay.in I had around 5K stuck in issue resolution. i thought it better to forego rather than wasting time to make calls, get print outs search mails for proof.
Even now i am really scared to make any purchase transaction costing over 5K on internet. My average experience over last six years had been 50% good, 30% okay and rest as failures.
I have found that for last couple of years professionalism among online shopper has increased tremendously. The same can't be said about site and transactional security.
What has not improved much is the attitude that 'customer is lying'. It appears that this strategy is followed by most of the dealers, unlike in US.

Re: Is Online Shopping in India Still a Dicey Business?

Exactly. I've never heard of issue resolution wrt eBay india.

However, I ordered some RAM and a CPU on eBay USA worth $48 and $190 respectively and when they disappeared in transit (I was being miserly with shipping options ) eBay simply refunded my money after two weeks. I was amazed.

Once the same thing had happened with a third party transaction on Amazon (I think it was for a blu-ray drive) and even there, Amazon simply refunded my money and took up the case with the seller.

Good luck finding that kind of service with ebay.in.

The fact is a company such as Ebay with its experience and money and huge team of lawyers can risk a few hundred dollars for a customer that possibly and most probably as in your case will bring them more business.
With Desi sites, 3rd party dealings become highly circumstantial and difficult and ####ing dangerous because of a high rate of fraud and frankly these companies don't have either the expertise or capital to go after these thieves.
Plus most of these frauds are done to stoooopid people, the frauds are very easy to catch but these awesome guys never see it. And in those cases I say that they deserve it.

As in the case of direct online dealings, I find India going places. It is improving. There are numerous websites offering sales of various items although with 'modest' pricing. However sadly, there are Still People Like Amarbir Whose Degree Of Professionalism Is Best Left Undescribed.
