Re: NVIDIA GTX 480 Makes Benchmarking Debut, Matches ATI HD 5870 Performance

Guys, lets look at positives.

The average frame rate looks a tad better,so maybe in games that fully utilize the features of DX11, these may give us better performance. $500 is not too bad, many 5870s are going for $420 odd. I hope these guys get a really good driver set soon and get a fix on the heat and power consumption issue.

If this is an epic fail, bad for us

OK lets not talk BULLshit here the fact is nvidia frames are much more stable then ATI it doesn't matter if they released it late .

if you want better drivers support go for nvidia i know stonesurd will talk about the latest driver mishap but that's just one time and it wont harm your card if you have not overclocked your card

what it doesnt matter??? The benchmarks were compared to stock reference 5870's mostly. What about the oc version, or let aside the oc version, almost all 5870's are able to do 1000/1100 on core/memory, I am sure these 480's do not have that much headroom for OC and when you compare to the overclocked 5870's, fermi would just pale, also there are non-reference 5870's like the 2GB Mars? card coming out soon, Fermi is destined to fail IMO, apart from the fact that Nvidia has better marketing and more fan-boi's who would buy Nvidia, no matter what........

well you never know you are just assuming the nvidia card do not have that much OC potential, we will get to know that by the time

you are talking about Fermi like you have already bench marked it

fan boism i still cant understand why would some one buy anything just because he or she likes the name i mean i will only do that if you can get the card for free by doing that

it is still too soon to comment on other card's but the results in this news are promising

One can comment based on certain things that are fairly common knowledge:

1. several cases are 'Fermi-certified' - obviously these cards are either very heavy or very hot to require special certification from chassis manufacturers

2. The coolers are enormous - points to high thermal output.

3. the IHS is massive - points to a large die

4. Needs 8-pin and 6-pin connectors - higher power consumption

So yeah, no one is talking out of their asses, we're all trying to work with the limited information we have. At this stage, Fermi looks like a bit of an expensive gamble.

Re: NVIDIA GTX 480 Makes Benchmarking Debut, Matches ATI HD 5870 Performance

An expensive gamble? It doesn't seem worth at all. And the fact that its matching the 5870s performance with a *logically* higher heat output makes the 5870 a truly decent buy at that price point. Just my $.02
