Mumbai Police launches Wi-Fi security drive

Mumbai Police launches Wi-Fi security drive

The Mumbai Police is undertaking a massive move to crack down unsecured Wi-Fi connections and networks in the city. The move comes after last year's two major terror incidents including the Ahmedabad serial blasts and Mumbai attacks, where the terrorists had used Internet and communication networks in their operations.

The drive will start at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), the business hub located in the western-central city suburb, followed by residential areas at Malabar Hill, south Mumbai.

As part of this move, an 80-member Mumbai Police officers' team armed with gadgets and equipment including laptops, Internet enable mobile phones and devices will visit residences randomly across the city to detect unsecured Internet networks.

During the Ahmadabad serial blasts investigation, it found that terrorist outfit Indian Mujahideen had allegedly intercepted and hacked the computer of Kenneth Haywood, a US citizen residing in Sanpada, a Mumbai suburb.

In another incident, an unsecured Wi-Fi network from Chembur based Kamran Powers Control Private Limited was used by terrorists for posting emails after the New Delhi blasts on September 13, 2008.

Also, a Wi-Fi network was traced from Mumbai's Khalsa College, where an email was sent to a media house by members of IM and had threatened to kill police officers involved in the investigation.

"It's an awareness campaign, where the police officials will educate the users about security aspect of WiFi networks. And the officer's team will visit homes, schools, colleges and offices to check unsecured networks," Sanjay Mohite, Deputy Commissioner of Mumbai Police informed media.
He added that such unsecured networks and unprotected IP addresses are misused by terror outfits and other cyber criminals.

So the final goal looks to be running for Wi-Fi signals, identify those that are unsecured, then either shut them down or have business and residential users take steps to protect them from unauthorized access.

But how strong will the task force be technically? The details are still unclear, and this is a matter to be concerned about. I hope they take support from proper tools/companies who actually know the drill of securing Wi-Fi networks. And anyway securing all unsecure networks is going to be a tough job, What do you think....

Regards,
Prash

Re: Mumbai Police launches Wi-Fi security drive

^^ Lame step. Its ****ing against freedom. I want to share my internet connection with the world or friends/family (actually I don't ) ... just a way to harass "friendly" people

Terrorist have lot of better options. Just google for mixmaster. there are lot more complex options which terrorists have! ...
Steps like these make me understand why terrorists/anarchists are born! ..

nice move by Mumbai police, atleast they have started giving importance to cyber crimes...^^ why do you not understand that if a little discomfort to us may save so many lives...i know these guys r lazy...but when this drive comes into media , awareness will be created among people about their unsecured wifi. most of the people will secure their wifi so that they they dont get into trouble wid cops.

i feel had this drive been done by New York police..you wud hav appreciated the drive.

>> i feel had this drive been done by New York police..you wud hav appreciated the drive.

and your precise reasoning behind this would be <fill in the blanks> ......

>> why do you not understand that if a little discomfort to us may save so many lives.

its not a discomfort. It actually a boon for me (and my likes) who just found a reason
not to share their 8mbps connection with aunty-uncle next door

I couldn't be more happy. Anyways they aren't forcing you to use WPA2 RADIUS
(they can't!) .. at max. they will push WPA PSK (that too unlikely) .. come on man! ...
its one more publicity stunt to convince people that govt. and police gives a ****.
(Actually I don't give a sh*t too ) ... but then again I don't claim/act otherwise.
and even a script kiddy (me me me!!!) can easily crack those secure connections.

I mean its invasion of my freedom!!! ... did you happen to check out the latest Cyber laws?
Just tell me that you don't find them funny.

I agree with chirkut.
An internet connection is a private thing. Tell them to mind their own business.
And as he said, it's not like the terrorists don't have better options.
