Motorola Close to Completing 'Project Ara' Modular Smartphone Prototype

Motorola's Project Ara which aims to make an upgradeable modular smartphone real continues to progress at a steady pace. This week Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside confirmed that an Ara prototype is 'pretty close' to completion. "There is a [Project Ara] prototype and it is pretty close," "Moto Maker was the beginning of a more exciting and longer term story which is how do we involve consumers and give them more choice." and that "Ara is much further out but you can see how those two things tie together and how as we introduce new materials into Moto Maker we're gonna pursue that theme across our product line going forward. What we'd like to eventually get to is [customising] functionality within the device and that's where Project Ara and Moto Maker may converge." Woodside said. It will still take time to finish, test and mass produce the phone.

Woodside also said the phone may eventually be available through Moto Maker. https://www.motorola.com/us/motomaker For the moment, MotoMaker is only used for customizing Moto X devices (customers can choose colours for the front and back of the device as well as accents, storage, and wallpaper.

Project Ara was announced back in October and hopes to increase the life of smartphones via upgradable and swappable modules. Motorola said then, "Our goal is to drive a more thoughtful, expressive, and open relationship between users, developers, and their phones. To give you the power to decide what your phone does, how it looks, where and what it's made of, how much it costs, and how long you'll keep it." These modules would cover everything from the CPU, GPU, Ram, speakes, display, battery etc. If all goes to plan then the first ara phones should be avilible sometime in 2014.
