Interesting Motorola Announces "Project Ara"

Few weeks back we saw a very interesting concept, The PhoneBlok. The idea was really amazing but a lot of people didn't think that it would be successful.
People who don't know about this concept, basically phoneblok is an idea which allows you to buy individual parts of a smartphone and assemble your own smartphone just like you can assemble a desktop computer. Such a smartphone will give the ability for people to customise the phone according to their needs and budget besides reducing e-waste.

The Project Ara is a similar concept. Motorola has been working on this concept for one year now.

According to Motorola
The design for Project Ara consists of what we call an endoskeleton (endo) and modules. The endo is the structural frame that holds all the modules in place. A module can be anything, from a new application processor to a new display or keyboard, an extra battery, a pulse oximeter--or something not yet thought of!

Motorola is working with Dave Hakkens, the man behind the phoneblok concept to develop a phone that is modular, open and customisable. Soon they will be sending invites to developers to start creating modules for the Ara Platform. A Module Developer's Kit (MDK) could be ready and up for release this winter.

Just a few weeks ago people were saying that the phonebloks concept was unrealistic and here it is true already. The good thing is that Motorola Mobility is owned by Google, so this project has the backing and muscle of Google behind it.

I'm really excited about this. It could be a new era for smartphones.

We have not yet seen the prices and the implementation of this thing. It is still in its nascent stage.

If it gets priced higher, would you buy it just for the fact that it is customizable at a premium? I won't.

Re: Motorola Announces "Project Ara"

This is a concept, much in a nascent stage, this would not work.
If this could have worked then the first things that would have been adopting this would have been laptops.

And bad as I think.... Remember what vogue creations have died despite the backing of Google...

Of course it is still in the early stages, but Google have dispelled a few myths like -

1. No major manufacturer would be interested in the concept.
2. It will be too bulky
3. It will be ugly and unattractive

Regarding the price, Once it reaches mass production and you dont have to pay for the branding then it will be much more cheaper than pre-assembled phones during the initial purchase. Upgrades would surely be far more cheaper.

Re: Motorola Announces "Project Ara"

^ You are forgetting two most important caveats about this -

1. Compatibility. Sure, cheaper options will be available, but to make sure everything works with every single permutation and combinations of device blocks, a huge driver library would need to be built.

2. Inter-block connection - Unless we invent something which can give us same/faster transfer speeds than those components being in a single PCB, we might be looking at lag/performance issues here.

I want this idea to succeed, but at this point of time it is really at a prototype stage and even if they manage to pull this off, the result will be an exorbitantly priced device with performance caveats and compatibility issues.

Of course all the blocks will be compatible and a breeze to make. They will be kits to help module developers make blocks of their choice. If you read Motorola's official blog post here The Official Motorola Blog: Goodbye Sticky. Hello Ara. They say that the Module Developers Kit (MDK) will be available by this winter. Apparently there will be prizes for the developers too.

There will be no lag at all. Do you experience lag while working on your modular desktop? Are laptops faster than desktops? No they are not. The miniscule lag you are talking about can be shown in theory. In practice there will be no lag.

Remember Google is backing this. Not some clueless company like Microsoft making Kin phones. This could turn out to be the Android of hardware

Re: Motorola Announces "Project Ara"

Original concept was of Phonebloks, they have collaborate with them for undisclosed sum of money.
Lets see, what future this have.........Moto neva made cheaper phones by so far & India is no longer in Moto list for official purchases.

Re: Motorola Announces "Project Ara"

Well its new and radical concept n believe it or not sometimes i used to think "What if mobile could be assembled"??
Its going to be real now n should be pretty interesting
n am not that great in these technical stuff
but what i think is, even when first android was out it was not that popular at first(correct me if am wrong)
so we can't predict if it'll lag or not or even about the price till its out n ready n btw every new thing has few glitches which can be rectified with time
thing is this whole concept is awsome n interesting

With Tablets and Cellphones becoming marginally more popular than traditional computers, i expect something similar to happen for sure. Android is a modular OS which can run on almost anything.
