Re: Mobile Phones on Contract in India?!

Mobile Phones don't sell on contract basis in India.. I don't think any telecom provider sells mobile phones. Except maybe Reliance CDMA.

No provider in India sells phones on contact basis.

Maximum you'll get is a few free months of Edge on some Android phones.

I.e. on the full price of the phone.

Well as the saying goes - There is no free lunch. If the phone is subsidised by the provider then the usage plan that you get will be expensive to cover up the cost of the phone. Besides that the phone will be locked to the service provider. They tried this and this does not work in India. People here want unlocked phones and plans of their choice.

Not always. Some phones can be bricked as has been done by Airtel in the past. Besides that you may have to pay a security deposit as well which will be confiscated if you decide not carry on with your contract. Also the warranty on the phone could be void if you unlock it. Besides that you could also be sued in court of law for breaking the law. Its not like they will be very happy if you play with their money.

Why do you want all of that? Just buy the phone with your own money.

Re: Mobile Phones on Contract in India?!

It doesn't matter if the phones can be locked or not.

If we had contract based plans here, We'd be paying 3-4 times as much as we are right now. No way am I up for that.

Re: Mobile Phones on Contract in India?!

Yup, if you paid 10k for the iPhone instead of 30k, instead of your 30p/minute or 10p/minute, it would be Rs. 1/min or Rs.2/min. And Data would also be more expensive. And remember, you'll be paying more month by month, and tied to the same phone for 1/2/3 years. And if you tried to upgrade during the contract, you would have to pay full price.

And don't forget, if you want to get out of the contract, you have to pay ETF.

Here, the system is complex. You need a SSN to sign a contract, and all the details are on your SSN. If you break the contract, even when paying ETF and your dues, it still is on record, tied to your SSN. And when other carriers/companies do credit checks, they see that bad record on your SSN, which affects everything else big time.
