MMS, Tethering working on iPhone 3G (IPCC Included)

Basically, what all this means is, Apple is now giving a lot more flexibility to the Carriers in terms of customizing the use of APN for specific purposes. What this would allow a Carrier to do is charge differently for different uses. A Carrier could introduce a 'Tethering' specific APN which the user would then have to subscribe to to get tethering working on a particular device (at the same time the normal iPhone data would continue working because the APN for that is different and is MARKED different.)

Thats exactly what the 'type-mask' field allows the provider to do. Mark each APN for specific purposes. For example, a type-mask of '48' would allow a APN to be used for Tethering only. Other APNs would be responsible for providing the MMS and DATA services.

In my particular case, I had 2 APNS.

APN 'www' was originally intended for iPhone data... but that doesn't mean that I cannot use it for tethering. Also, the APN 'portalnmms' is intended for use with Vodafone Live! (which includes the MMS service), hence I need to mark it likewise.

Since I wanted Tethering Traffic, Tethering Auth and Data to be enabled on the 'www' APN, I calculated the type-mask like so:

110001 (MMS, VVM are disabled in this)

Converted to decimal system, this resulted in: 49

Similarly I wanted the 'portalnmms' service only to be utilized for the MMS service.

Thus the type-mask:

000100 (MMS enabled, all else disabled)

In decimal = 4 (you can use Calculator to do the conversions for you, just use the Scientific mode.)

Having arrived the the proper type-masks, we can now start editing the IPCC with proper APN entries...
