Microsoft Surface Pro Laplets Price Starts at Rs 45,500

No bundled touch cover or Office, half the battery life of RT and heavier

Microsoft has announced in a blog post that Surface with Windows 8 Pro will be available in January in two versions and pricing will start at $899 (Rs 45,500). The key differences between the Surface Pro version and the Surface RT version are that the pro version has better hardware specs and can run older X 86 apps.

The two versions are

• 64GB standalone version at $899 (Rs 45500)
• 128GB standalone version at $999 (Rs 53000)

Both versions will both include a Surface pen but no touch cover/keyboard which will have to be purchased separately for $120 (Rs 6500) or the type cover for $130 (Rs 7000). The package does not include Microsoft Office software like in the RT version. The battery life will be half of that of the RT version because of the higher specs and is expected to last about 4-5 hours of use. The weight of the Surface Pro is also higher at 903 grams compared to 676 grams for Surface RT and 652 grams for Apples iPad.

Surface with Windows 8 Pro uses the same basic design as the Windows RT including the Dark Titanium VaporMg casing, dual 2x2 MIMO antennas designed specifically for Surface and of course the kickstand.

On the inside, Surface with Windows 8 Pro will come with Intel’s next generation Core i5 processor. This chip will give Surface with Windows 8 Pro a graphics boost for its 10.6” 16:9 ClearType display that runs at a 1920x1080 full HD resolution. Surface with Windows 8 Pro also includes a full-size USB 3.0 port. Its Mini DisplayPort can drive an external display up to 2560X1440 resolution. Surface with Windows 8 Pro will support Pen input which can be used for taking notes or editing documents. It also features a Palm Block that will prevent your handwriting from getting interrupted if you accidentally place your palm on the screen as you write.

So this means that a 128GB Surface Pro with Type cover will cost about Rs 70,000 in the U.S and about Rs 80-90k over here. There is no indication as to when this might be available in India.

Fair pricing. But as expected, India pricing is upwards of 65k.
Shall wait for it to plateau and I just may take the plunge.

I found Ativ Smart PC Prov which cost around 1199 USD. They provide configuration with core i5 version with 4GB of RAM with 128 GB SSD. Defintaely it not affordable at all.

Considering we are in India, that pricing will not be applicable. Sony usually has a huge difference in pricing - I got my Z seires for $2500 when it was costing INR 1.8L here in India. (In case anyone is interested, there is a sweet deal in the US is you buy this baby in bulk - 1100 for the 1499 one)

Why would you look at "ativ" when you have sony giving a better deal at that price!

nice deal at the sony lappy,well this rule applies mostly with all the electronic imported..Only slight worry is warranty

I liked the surface for its portability and versatility. I might buy one.
And for storage problem I can buy an external drive of 1 TB.

One of the main reasons some of these PRO Tablets/ Slates are interesting is that they support Multi touch (5 - 10 fingers) + Digital Pen (for inking).

Touch & Pen is a brilliant combination and more machines will see this.

Inking / Pen is where Apple has been a little behind.
