Icon8 Microsoft to Let Windows 7 Die Quicker Than Windows XP

Since Windows XP will go dark on April 8, 2014, many users have decided to make the move to a newer operating system. Still, despite Microsoft's aggressive marketing campaign for the new 8 and 8.1, many are actually moving to Windows 7, which is often described as a more user-friendly platform.

The tech giant, on the other hand, is willing to make everything to bring more users to Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, so it appears that Windows 7 support won't be extended.

Paul Thurrot is reporting on WindowsITPro that Microsoft wants to avoid dealing with the same problems of moving users to a newer platform when Windows 7 reaches end of support, so the company is willing to let its OS die at the original date.

At the same time, it will continue to promote both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, just to make sure that those who want to move to a newer operating system will be familiar with the company's new offering.

Mainstream support for Windows 7 will end on January 13, 2015, while extended support, which only includes bug fixes and a number of critical security patches, will end on January 14, 2020.

Windows 7 would last till the users are using it.. !
and as for Windows 8 and now 8.1 !!
they would be better placed as and when the touch market segment becomes stable.

Windows 7 will last more than 2015 for sure, even with no support for DX11.2 and other perks. Now that we have an alternative API in the form of AMD Mantle, things can easily be evened out.

Re: Microsoft to Let Windows 7 Die Quicker Than Windows XP

This news itself is wrong and the person writing this news doesnt know what he is talking about. The article seems to suggest that evil Microsoft is engaged in some sort of conspiracy to short-change Windows 7 users and coerce them to move to Windows 8. This is just not true.

Actrually Windows 7 support has already been extended by Microsoft. Earlier consumer versions Windows used to get five years of mainstream support, and business versions used to get an additional five years of extended support. Since February 2012, Microsoft has revised its support policy for consumer versions of Windows so that they qualify for extended support as well.

Ed Bott explains some of the changes in detail here Microsoft quietly extends consumer support for Windows 7, Vista | ZDNet

What is the complaint here? that Microsoft is giving consumers an additional 5 years of support for free?

This line seems to suggest that Microsoft is willing to let Win 7 die in 2015. Again this is a total misrepresentation of what Paul had said. I think he would be horrified to see how his words are being twisted here.

Paul had originally said :

"It [Microsoft] believes that by "listening" to customers with Windows 8.1, it can make this happen, and that the business-oriented changes in that version of the OS put it over the top."

So what Paul was saying is that Microsoft wants to take feedback from customers and make changes to their products so that people dont feel the need to stick to the old OS. There is no element of coercion here.

Articles like this is the reason no one takes Softpedia as a serious website for tech news.

Re: Microsoft to Let Windows 7 Die Quicker Than Windows XP

Microsoft support on Windows Vista/Windows 7 would be for 10 years from the date of release in the market. The company that i work with just upgraded to Windows 7 after almost 3 years and we would be using Windows 7 enterprise for the next 4 years so that makes it 2017. Would agree to what Vijay said.
