Microsoft to Launch Tablets in the Rs 10k Range

After miserably failing in trying to copy Apple and losing billions in trying to sell expensive tablets, Microsoft has decided to stop focusing exclusively on expensive tablets and instead try to make something affordable for the vast majority of consumers. Microsoft will launch low-cost Windows tablets in the coming months, specifically made for consumers in India. The tablets, which could sell for as low as Rs 10,000.

The tablets will likely be made by Microsoft's traditional computer partners like HP and Dell as well as by local Indian firms like Karbonn and Lava.

Earlier Microsoft had put very strict conditions on which manufacturers will be allowed to make Microsoft tablets, what kind of hardware, look, feel and even what software they will offer. The result - No manufacturer now wants to make Windows tablets and consumers cant afford what is available. Instead Android became the Windows of the mobile world and Apple retained its hold of the premium market.

Amrish Goyal, director of Windows business group

"We are reducing our required hardware specification for Windows to bare minimum that is needed for good experience. We want to be price competitive with Android. We want to get the bill of material for Windows tablets down," Amrish Goyal, director of Windows business group, told the Times of India in a recent interview.

"We will probably not sell a tablet for Rs 5,000. But yes, we will sell tablets with a price of around Rs 10,000 by middle of this year," Goyal added.

Right now it is extremely difficult to find Windows tablets in Indian shops. The starting price of Windows tablets is Rs 25,000 in India whereas good Android tablets with a better ecosystem cost as little as Rs 10,000. The upcoming tablets will therefore help Microsoft achieve price parity with Android devices in the market.

According to Gartner figures released last week, Microsoft sold 40 lakh tablets worldwide in 2013. This gave the company a market share of 2.1%. In comparison, Apple sold 7 crore tablets and Google's Android powered 12.1 crore tablets. Even that figure is suspect as most of those 40 lakh have been sold in the distribution channel and not to end users. Microsoft does not provide any data of activations unlike Android.

The low-cost Windows tablet in India is a myth | Windows Phone Central
From what I read in your link, the person has not clarified but made it more confusing. And it is not in any paper just in this blog post.

The specific quote was :
"We will probably not sell a tablet for Rs 5,000. But yes, we will sell tablets with a price of around Rs 10,000 by middle of this year."
Now that cant be a misquote. It is much too specific to be a misquote. So either Amrish Goyal is saying that TOI is telling lies or he is getting cold feet for leaking such forward guidance.

Re: Microsoft to Launch Tablets in the Rs 10k Range

I am not being judgemental or want to be.. !!
I (as I said ) would want low priced windows tablets but the real situation is that they won't..

If it happens then I would be the first person to order that...
the person who made you rather confusing is a large figure, and as for TOIor other tech publications, they are all useless reporters'

Re: Microsoft to Launch Tablets in the Rs 10k Range

The only reason why windows tablets are expensive is cz windows in itself is expensive , compared to android which is open source ...

A genuine windows license (oem)
Costs nearly 3-4k...

So doing the maths , the windows tablet costing around 10k will have similar configuration of that of an android tablet costing 6k ...

Well .. they can sell cheap tabs .. but they cant be that cheap ... though M$ has partnered up with karbon for making windows phones ... an announcement for a tab is still to be made ..

Re: Microsoft to Launch Tablets in the Rs 10k Range

This seems like a long tradeoff for company such as Microsoft.

But it can happen!
The tablets wouldn't have the best of specs in that price point, and would probably be running either AMD APUs or Intel's low cost Atom Dual cores Clovertrail SoCs.
With Intel releasing low cost SoCs this year, like the codenamed "Sofia" in order to hit Droid/Windows tablets with 3G support around $99.
And that's exactly Microsoft would be eyeing upon.
Not at all impossible. Not atleast in my eyes.
