Re: Increase Down Speed : )

This is my max possible value.

C:\Users\Sathya>ping 192.168.1.1 -l 1472 -f

Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 1472 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=1472 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=1472 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=1472 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=1472 time=1ms TTL=64

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 1ms

But then should the above said software be downloaded and i have to set this in that??? or simply setting this somewhere in command prompt is enough???? Please enlighten me on this value also. Does it change for every boot ???? Or is it constant value???

Re: Increase Down Speed : )

If you are using bridge mode dialer on WinXP, you cannot use an MTU greater than 1480 due to the limits of the rasdialer they have used.

Neor0tic posted the method for finding the MSS (TCP data size) and not the MTU. Besides the gateway, you'll also have to verify whether you packets are getting fragmented while traversing the internet.
Code:
ping -f -l 1452 www.google.com
If you are using bridge mode on winxp(rasdial), at anything more than 1452 you'll get fragmentation .
Therefore, your maxMTU = 1452 (MSS) + 28 (the sum of IP + ICMP headers) =1480

If however you are using PPPoE mode, your maxMTU should be no more than 1492 because MSS cannot be more than 1464 (inclusive of the PPPoE headers).
Please note, if you mess this up, your upload speeds will become abysmal and you may have trouble browsing.

1500 is the largest IP packet that can travel without getting fragmented. Its is to be used only on non-PPPoE, non-VPN connections and not the DSL ones we use.

In WinXP, the MTU value resides in the registry here:
Code:
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\[AdapterID]
Name: MTU
Type: DWORD
My maxMTU = 1480, MSS=1452 (MTNL Triband on WinXP bridge mode)

You may also set the following:
TCP Receive Window size: 65535
Window Scaling: ON
MTU path discovery: ON
Time Stamping: OFF
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize: -1

Re: Increase Down Speed : )

first start with mss of 1452 and test with the ping method. if you get fragmentation, decrease mss by 1 and retry until you don't get any fragmentation. Add 28 to this value. this will be your max mtu. windows rasdialer in bridge mode is the limiting step. You may switch to an alternate dialer like RASPPPoE, or to the router's PPPoE mode and of course Linux if you want a 1492 mtu (but 12 bytes more than the ease of the default rasdialer is hardly worth the effort. )

Network MTU (bytes)
16 Mbps Token Ring 17914
4 Mbps Token Ring 4464
FDDI 4352
Ethernet 1500
IEEE 802.3/802.2 1492
PPPoE (WAN Miniport) 1480
