even if i try to bypass the error thing.. and restart the app.. the app then restarts normally showing files present in the pendrive only i guess, and nothing else. phone pluggin in or not simply doesnt put any effect on the same
* Open Terminal type sudo -s
* now type sudo nautilus
* If you get errors just close nautilus folder and the terminal
* Open a new terminal type sudo -s
* type sudo nautilus
* MAKE SURE THE PHONE IS IN DOWNLOAD MODE!! (Press volume up + power button together)
* Connect the phone to usb cable
* Many nautilus folders will open ONLY 1 of the folders that opened has USERDATA access it is usually underneath all the others
* Use this USERDATA nautilus folder to cut/paste the 3 Superuser files.

follow the remaining steps of the Op

Re: How to Root Any Android Device Manually

@FR @Huawei X6
A little help here. I followed all the steps and everything seemed to go fine but when I did an "su" on adb shell I too got a "Permission Denied" message.
I get the same "Permission Denied" message when trying to "su" on the Terminal Emulator app. The ONLY thing I observed was that like X6, I didn't wipe out data/cache before upgrading to 2.3.4 from stock FW. Would this has played any role in me not being able to root?

If so, How do I revert back to stock firmware?
PS: I already tried a complete Factory reset and tried the procedure again but no luck

What other things can I try?

(Thanks for the excellent tutorial though, explained very well. I feel like I am almost there...)

Re: How to Root Any Android Device Manually

Are you trying the Spice 2.3.4 fw?
Try the CherryMobile one instead.
For some reason, even @paarkhee couldn't get this to work.
I'd recommend you to wait for russell's villainrom which will be prerooted.

Re: How to Root Any Android Device Manually

@FR Yeah I am on CherryMobile 2.3.4(Magnum HD). Yeah I guess I'll have to wait for russells's ROM. Following that thread over at XDA closely. Let me know if you find anything else. Thanks again!

I got the same error in Linux while trying to run Nautilus (reported earlier by someone else). By using the above method i was able to run nautilus as root and successfully root my phone. Its now running cherry mobile GB 2.3.4. Thanks FR and Huawei X6.

Re: How to Root Any Android Device Manually

@All
Anybody tried the Custom Rom available @android4u? I tried it but it gives me a "Verification failed" error of sorts. Any ideas?

Re: How to Root Any Android Device Manually

Gentlemen! Root on Cherry Mobile 2.3.4 finally!!!!
After three to four days of trying the same method with god knows how many ROM changes and what not but this is what worked for me:
  • I skipped the Windows XP steps listed to copy the three files to the device.
  • Boot a Live copy of Linux Mint 11(Ubuntu 11.04 should also work) and open up Nautilus just like the Tutorial says(sudo -s followed by nautilus).
  • Download the three files and extract them to your Desktop(or wherever).
  • Put your phone in Download mode and connect it to your computer.
  • Open the system/app directory in the root privileged nautilus window(there is only one such window) and drag the Superuser.apk file to this directory.
  • Open the system/bin directory in the root privileged nautilus window(same window) and drag the su & busybox files to this directory.
  • Open up a new terminal tab/window and navigate to /media/system/app and do chmod 644 Superuser.apk
  • Now navigate to /media/system/bin and do chmod 755 busybox followed by chmod 6755 su
Remove battery and turn your phone on and you should have root.

Maybe this will help people who couldn't root with the method described by OP. Kudos to FR for the method and thanks to everybody for their help.

Please post if you have questions.

This Method works, Tried myself and got the Root, Thanks to Free Radical and Asky for the wonderful job, btw I'm still on Spice CSL 2.3.4 and removed all the bloatware which has come with the ROM with Titanium Backup Pro, Somehow I find Spice ROM more stable than Cherry Mobile and I didn't even Wipe Userdata and Cache, Just booted in Ubuntu 11.04 Live and performed the steps shown by Asky and got the Root. So anyone facing problems with root can surely a try to this method atleast once and see.
