Idea How to Interpret HDD Model Number

Its very confusing when purchasing a new HDD because there are multiple versions each designed for a specific purpose. Here is a list of naming convention used by HDD manufactures, so that you can choose a HDD best suited for your needs.

Note: Stay away from HDDs designed for Audio/Video recording. Their firmware is optimized to keep recording a surveillance footage even if they miss few bits to write onto the surface. AV files will not crash if they miss few bits, but executable files will. So never ever use a AV series like WD AV-GP, EURX or Seagate VX series for booting or storing important non AV files.

Here is WD's naming convention.

Seagate's provided in following post by @realandR3cys

Nice find there mate

I'd say, compared to the numerous WD models, it's quite easy to find out the naming conventions in case of Seagate.

People can look upto this for Seagate Int. Drives :

Re: How to Interpret HDD Model Number

Seagate used a different naming convention for their older drives. So it's a no-brainer that those old drives aren't listed there.
