Help with an old VIA board!!

hi all

I just brought my old Athlon XP 2600+ back to life with a "new" board - a VIA KT600 chipset based one, with VIA v8237 as the Southbridge... (was the only Socket A board I could find with 400Mhz FSB suport and AGP 8X)..

neways, m having some problems with getting my DVD Writer to work with it. I'm using XP Prof. SP2, and installled the VIA Hyperion v5.17a drivers (got them from the via website - these are the current recommended drivers for KT600)... Whenever I pop in a CD or DVD, it fails to read it. The LED on my drive keeps blinking randomly for about a minute, and the DVD kees spinning, but in the end, I get an 'Unable to read" error... I'm using a Liteon 20x drive and I tested it on my other system just to confirm that it hadn't gone bad...

I'm assuming this has got to do with some problems in the driver, and/or conflicts with the OS IDE drivers... I've tried re-installing the drivers, but it doesn't help. The IDE channels on the board are working fine, i guess, since I did a clean install of Windows and it booted fine from the CD...

I've tried googling for this issue, but didn't come up with anything useful... help!!!!!

Re: Help with an old VIA board!!

Update: I ran a DriverAgent.com scan of drivers... it showed me that my IDE driver was obsolete / incorrect... the i re-installed the hyperion package... now it shows me that the drivers are fine...
:O

I still think it's a driver issue... anyone who's come across this???

Re: Help with an old VIA board!!

tried rolling back... doesn't work... m using 2 HDDs and one DVD writer... the HDD's are on primary master and slave... and DVD Writer is secondary master.... Have disabled SATA from bios (thought that it might be conflicting with the IDE drivers or something)... but that hasn't helped...

The drive worked fine when i was installing windows, so it's probably not a mobo issue...

Any other suggestions?? I'm thinking of going for a format and a second clean install... ... but that really is the last option...

Re: Help with an old VIA board!!

just try to uninstall the drive from the device manager ... and also install a new IDE cable just for the heck of it .. and then try ... also try using at as a slave device on the primary channel ..... ive seen this particular issue with quite a few motherboards where there is a BIOS issue which renders one of the IDE ports useless. Although a BIOS update mostly solves the issue
