Google Launches Itself as DNS Server

Google Launches Itself as DNS Server

Google wants to see IP

In yet another step by Google towards becoming lord and master of the online world, the firm has announced its new public Domain Name System (DNS) server, which will enable people to go through Google rather than their ISPs to get to any website.

Google's product manager Prem Ramaswami made the announcement in a blog, saying the firm wanted to speed up everything to do with DNS interactions, which convert text URLs to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.

"You could think of it as the switchboard of the Internet, converting easy-to-remember domain names - e.g.,Google - into the unique Internet Protocol (IP) numbers - e.g., 74.125.45.100 - that computers use to communicate with one another," explained Ramaswami.

He went on to explain that because the average Internet user ends up performing hundreds of DNS lookups each day, and some complex pages require multiple DNS lookups before they start loading, the whole process can really bog down the browsing experience.

So to speed up the process, Google says its boffins have found a way to turn Google itself into a global DNS service "to make users' web-surfing experiences faster, safer and more reliable," according to Ramaswami.

The firm is already inviting "web-savvy" users to check it out, saying that if you're comfortable with changing your network settings, you should "check out the Google Code Blog for detailed instructions and more information on how to set up Google Public DNS on your computer or router."

So, what's in it for Google? The firm is steadfastly sticking to its line of speeding up the net, but there's an awful lot of valuable information to be gleaned from DNS related work. For example, Google would be able to know where servers were physically located, what web sites people visited and with what frequency, all valuable, monetisable information.

Way to add to your own self-importance, Google.

Re: Google Launches Itself as DNS Server

I am setting this up now...
google 4tw...

On another note, this is quite a development on google's part.. They are practically turning up everywhere. Soon, we'll see:

gToothBrush beta: It'll have the latest of gBristle technology and will be completely free. It'll also feature ads on the handle relating to your 'tastes' It'll do so through a gNano built in sensor in the gBrush's bristles. But the real question is, will gToothBrush be able to survive in front of the iToothBrush.
Back to topic: Even though they strictly say to stand by their privacy protection stuff, the fact is if google wants to, it can prob. rape our entire lives from the Google Campus itself....
Moral: Don't mess with google, EVER !!!

Edit:

Did I mention gCondoms(for description PM me) ??

Am also getting ~160ms to 8.8.8.8 but it only 40-50 to the airtel dns, and since no probs with airtel so far so am sticking to Airtel.
Also youtube is slower in 8.8.8.8 !

The fact is this service is faster than OpenDNS... unless you're particularly afraid of losing any valuable information that you share via the internet,(I am not afraid, because I don't share any such information) GoogleDNS will be the first choice...

Guys!!

This is a DNS service... all they do is translate a request for abc.xyz.tld to xxx.yyy.zzz.aaa !!
Ofcourse, considering that this is Google, they will lift a lot of information from these requests.

Google analytics is quite wide spread, so by using this service, they are not gaining any information which they ALREADY are not getting... but this takes the approach to information away from individual websites to the DNS level.

How this can be used? My guess is that if a user is browsing a site using Google Analytics (www.x.com) clicks a link and goes to www.y.com which does not use Analytics, if the user is on Google DNS, Google still tracks you across the Interweb.

If Google was out to get you, they already would... just use the service if it is faster for u than your local ISP's.

For me, the latency is 30 ms from UK.
