GMail Commander - Command Your PC Using GMail

GMail Commander
Control Your PC Using GMail

Here's a simple application with which you can control your PC using Gmail. Please note that this app is beta, so try it out at your own risk.

Make a fresh GMail account for use with this app to avoid conflicts and spam.

On the first run you'll be greeted by this box.

Enter the username (without @gmail.com) and password for the account

In the Accept IDs box, add your email ids which you may use to send an email to the app. You may add any number of email ids from any host and separate them with commas. Remember, there is no other security check in the app other than your email ids. So in order to prevent unauthorized access to your pc, add only the ones you will be using.

In the Refresh UpDown box, you can change the refresh interval for the app from 1 to 1000 minutes.
This is the time interval between detection of new emails. The app reads rss feeds from GMail and would typically use ~10 kB per refresh. Adjust it according to your bandwidth and data limits.

That's it!

I have added an intelligent algo to search your most used programs, favorites, quicklaunch, start menu shortcuts etc. so you don't need to know any program paths or switches.
Just save the shortcut in your favorites folder (autodetected even if you have customized the location) or start menu or quicklaunch and launch them by sending an email like

Code:

Run ShortcutName
(case insensitive)

You need to know only two more things:

  • Don't add any subject to the email to avoid grouping of emails!
  • Don't send the exact same command more than once in succession as the app would think its the same and not interpret it.

Here's an example demonstrating how I can control my PC using Nokia Messaging Email

You don't even need to know the full shortcut name, you can use the first few characters as well.
eg. in the example above
Code:

Run chrom
should work too and is interpreted as a different command

It takes a finite amount of time for the email to reach GMail plus the refresh interval.
The app typically runs within a minute of your sending out the email if your refresh interval is 1 minute, even if you are on the moon. Fast enough I guess.

Keep in mind that the app would not interpret any old emails.
But it must have an always on connection to function properly. Make sure the app is running before you send out an email command and that the app has access to the internet and your firewall is not blocking it.

Even if you disconnect while the app is running, it would remember the last email before the disconnection and would sleep till you reconnect.

This would help in further bandwidth savings eg. you can schedule a disconnect and reconnect via Task Scheduler and thereby limit the time period within which the app works.

Power to the people!

Doesn't work !! I sent an email, and it dodn't start chrome !~
Is here a timelag in the app on the PC for recovering email from the server?

Re: GMail Commander - Command Your PC Using GMail

just make a fresh email id for use with the app, configure the app with the new id, send an email through gmail normally to your new id through your old one.

of course there is a time lag.

keep the app running. gmail doesn't reflect the email instantaneously.
also, the refresh interval adds to the delay between each refresh.

remember, the app should be running before you send an email command

Works perfectly for me.
Just tested again.

errr... do you have a firewall running?
it must be denying access to the app to get feeds

Check your %Temp% folder.

Is there a GMail.XML file there?
If not, its your firewall/network at fault.
if there is, kindly post it here

Manish, you are sending an email from an id to the same id?

And what a messy inbox you have. 253 emails!!!

I told you to make a fresh account for this :P

Also I forgot to mention, don't send the same command twice. Try "Run chrom" or some other program.
The app should be running before you send the new email.

---------- Post added at 08:36 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:12 AM ----------

adding an updated version with some fault tolerance in a couple of minutes. This should work even if there is a disconnection while the app is running.

done. dl from the op

---------- Post added at 08:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:49 AM ----------

yippee. this version should work even if you accidentally disconnected while the app was running on subsequent reconnection (fault tolerant)

I tried it again and it is still not running the app... !!!
I sent the email form a different id too and then waited but nothing happened.. even gave the same command with different spelling...
the same one as you put, ie Run Chrome

Re: GMail Commander - Command Your PC Using GMail

Do you have a working shortcut called Chrome in your favorites/start menu ?
I realized that by default it is Google Chrome
I have a shortcut called Chrome in my Favorites, do you have one? :P

ok. try this:

First send an email like:
Run Google chrome

Then send
Run Opera

Then send
Run (add any shortcut name from start menu)

Send emails after a gap of 1 minute (or your refresh interval)

Manish. Try v1.002 from the first post

Anyone else try this?

Everyone plese note the screenshot I posted is a bit misleading since I have a shortcut called "chrome"

All you folks should try "Run Google Chrome"
