Re: GMail Commander - Command Your PC Using GMail

v1.40

This is a phenomenal update but I don't know whether it will work for you guys until you test.
It works just great for me.

Added feedback of the output via email to the user's id which sent the GMail command, so you'll know whether the command ran successfully and are no longer running blind.
The cmd function would email the command line output.

eg
Code:
cmd dir c:
would email you the directory listing of C: drive

Another useful function is the screen command.

Sending an email like:
Code:
screen<any string of alphanumeric characters>
eg.
Code:
screen xyz123
would email back a jpeg screenshot of the computer as an attachment

So you can even use this app on a headless server

v1.45
Bugfixes

Re: GMail Commander - Command Your PC Using GMail

Awesome..
I had made an outlook plugin 2-3 years ago to fetch files from your home computer in the same way and intended to extend it to make a remote commander kind of thing but then never found the time..
nice work FR..
BTW, one suggestion, do keep a secret password kind of thing in the app as anyone can fake the from email address.

PS: If anyone wants to get the outlook plugin, it's here: Remote File Access Through E-Mail | Shantanu's Technophilic Musings . Sorry for the plug

BTW, just saw the latest update.. Headless operation is just too cool. What language are you writing it in?

AHK + COM

Thanks for the appreciation.
This version is a bit buggy.
Would try to fix it later tonight when I reach home.

Have to add a find function and upload function to fetch files remotely.

Re: GMail Commander - Command Your PC Using GMail

v1.63

Numerous performance improvements.
Made it to run threads async (multuthreaded).

Now hopefully no bugs (cdo com errors)

Added set refresh function to change the refresh rate of the email syncing.
Code:
set refresh <time in minutes>
eg.
Code:
set refresh 5
Note, you can set the refresh rate to a minimum of 0.1 minutes using the set refresh command.
This makes the app hyper responsive and almost instantaneously respond to any email you send to your pc.
Code:
set refresh 0.1
But this also makes it consume more bandwidth as the syncing repeats every 0.1 minutes.
So remember to increase the refresh rate to a couple of minutes after use.
The set refresh command also saves your settings in the configuration file.

Re: GMail Commander - Command Your PC Using GMail

Here's a command line reference link for use with the cmd function of the app
Microsoft Windows XP - Command-line reference A-Z

Please note, you may need administrator privileges on Windows 7 / Vista to run some of these.

You will be emailed the output of all these commands, so if you have errors with any command, lemme know and I'll rectify it.

Todo:
  • Find command
  • Upload command
Why don't you use IMAP Idle to get push notifications for new mails from gmail? It will use very less bandwidth and will also be instantaneous. It's easy to implement in perl/python/java. Not sure about the level of work involved in your case.

Re: GMail Commander - Command Your PC Using GMail

v1.76

Added new Windows management function Win()
to activate, maximize, minimize, restore, hide, show, close and kill windows by name.

The subcommands used are:
act, max, min, res, hide, show, close, kill (you can use the full names eg. activate or any string of characters without whitespaces following the subcommand)

Code:
win <subcommand> <search string>
eg.
Code:
win activate Firefox
Code:
win act Firefox
Code:
wIN AcTfksskWsDFk Firefox
where the window title contains the string "Firefox".

Please note that the search string is case sensitive although the commands are not.
This has been done to facilitate emailing through mobile devices.

You will be emailed the window title if the command was successful
