Lovely to see the trip pics and videos..
@JD666, please don't encourage high speed driving like this.. its easy to drive at 140 or 160 but if there is an emergency then the driver has to know what happens.. that is the part where most users are clueless.. and that is dangerous..

We will have all the discussions about speed etc, in Person

Great man! Hope you have alot of fun on your trip.

How are the roads? And is it true that at times you can't see a car for miles?

Re: Drive to One of the Farthest Corners of the Country...

yup you cant spot a car for many kms..

Today was lucky to reach the actual border, where the fencing is.. Spent about two hours there.. One word, seeing that demarcation there, it was surreal.. More after dinner.

Yes i do agree, But if there is anyplace it can be done sanely, is here. We covered 91 kms in 1 hour flat ( longewala to Jaisalmer ).

And my new favourite road is the route from Longewala to RamGarh. 35 kms of the best twisties, bends, hills, undulations and what not.. On two occassions we were nearly airborne in a massive dip in the road!!

The road is like a masala flick, its got romance ( bends that you fall in love with ), suspense ( Dont know once reaching the top of the hill, which direction the road turns to ), Drama ( Sudden bumps between a sharp fast bend ), Action ( With the goats and cows playing villain and blocking the way ), Glamour ( with the great sights and vast plains )..

What more can you ask for!!!

The road till Bikaner is ok ok ( Ok ok being the same as the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway ). Beyond that they are pure bliss....

Cars and trucks are sparse all the way, even more so beyond bikaner ( most of the traffic is limited to NH8, jodhpur, Udaipur etc due to the flow of goods to Bombay, Kandla port etc ).

Today we crossed Jaisalmer to reach Tanot, and the only trucks we encountered were either the army, or of a local cement company or something. Thats all.

Reached Tanot. Its manned and managed by the BSF themselves. Very nice and clean complex.

- On the way to Tanot temple

A brief history about the goddess and the temple.

This was in a smaller temple to one side of the main temple ( accessible from the inside ), where people tie their handkerchiefs and make a wish. You can either tie the one in your pocket, or buy one. If your wish is granted, come and open any random one and complete the wish.

Some of the unexploded ordinance ( Defused and safe now ). Apparently over 3000 shells fell in and around that area, which dint explod. I mean talk about a bad batch of chinese stuff!! hehe.

Some photographs of the ordinance, Pakistani soldier's found buried, LMG etc etc.

At Tanot, got the necessary permissions to visit the border. They kept my D/L for identity's sake. Went to Border Pillar 609.

The turn that leads to the BP.

The camels were all numbered on the neck for identification.

It is lonely and desolate..( and for some dumb reason, i find it really romantic and fascinating!! ). One can actually get bored of seeing the same landscape again and again.. but its all beautiful to me.

You could hear the car's tyres on the road.. I dint even dare sound the horn.. it was really really quiet.. Quiet enough to hear the buzzing of flies and mosquitoes in the bushes!!!

If you look closely, you can see an observation tower and some buildings. Thats one of the outposts for the soldiers to live in.

Thats the last board on the road. You have reached your destination. Funnily enough my GPS indicated that i was past the border, and no longer in India!!!

That gate up ahead is the fencing at the border. About 100 meters walking from the car. ( I could've created an international incident by actually crashing the car into it!! lol! ).

This is probably the only snap i can share of the border.. The fencing that you see is on our side of the Border pillar. Though the actually pillars were about 100 odd feet on the other side. Our soldiers do venture uptil there, and there are weekly border patrols in conjunction with the soldiers on the other side.

You can see the two observation posts facing each other on either side. We have flood lit our side with big halogen lights at every 80 meters. And trust me they are bright. If anyone is flying to the middle east from delhi and has a night flight, due to clear skies now, you can see the entire border of india-pak lit up like a clear outline, just like you see in the maps!!!

Spent about 2 hours at the post. Chatted a lot with the BSF soldier there. Had prepared a small goodies and thank you packet for them. They were very happy to receive it. Thanked them, and appreciated the hard work they did.

It was an extremely humbling experience... i must say that.. The lands the same, so are the bushes, and Bang! There's another country right across you.. It makes you think so many things all at the same time... For those whose families suffered the brunt of the partition, they can understand what it means, to see this division, this gap.

Oh , though on the interesting bit, saw white pigeons.. Like pure white in color, and magnificent. Apparently these are found only there, not here. Saw one of ours ( grey one ), chasing one of theirs... egged em to get her and have some fun!! hehe..

Though really beautiful. Check it out -

From there we moved Back to the car, and then to Longewala

Parked at an actual dead end. The road, state, country, everything ends here!!!!
