Re: Do you notice a difference above 24 fps?

Very little is known about the interaction of rapidly varying complex
rendered images with the human visual system. The best we can do at this stage is to pick a
number that is hoped to be high enough. Some have even speculated that very high rendering
frame rates (in excess of 300 Hz) may interact more naturally with the human visual system to
produce motion blur effects than the traditional computer graphics techniques.
source :- http://www.google.co.in/url?sa=t&sou...3HnZ8jBmGmOprQ

To put it simply, we just don't know. Also, the statement "the human eye and brain cannot see beyond 24 fps" is a myth.

^^ Play an RTS Game with VSync off and then with it on.
Youll find out the difference.

what is exactly the refresh rate? the number of times the screen is updated in a second? someone kindly explain, if youre getting 120 fps, and are playing on a 60 hz screen, wont your screen be simply updating every other frame and not every frame? because the next frame is gonna get displayed only at the refresh time of the screen right?? so the screen can also be a hindrance here?

Extra frames get buffered. Read double and triple buffering.

Re: Do you notice a difference above 24 fps?

For me 60 FPS os great, 40 is good, anything below 35 gets irritating. Sometimes i wonder why ppl upgrade gpu for 20% or 10% gain when the actual FPS only jumps from 20-25 or so...
Like me: I upgraded from 8800gt to 4850, except benchmarks i dont feel much difference.... except ATI's IQ is better.
BTW Karan sir nice topic to discuss.

Re: Do you notice a difference above 24 fps?

In games, anything at or above 60 FPS looks good to me. I have played Crysis at 20-25 FPS and it looked smooth to me.

But why do movies and videos at 24-30 FPS appear more continuous, while some games at the same frame rate look a bit choppy? The answer is motion blur.

Games like Crysis play smooth at 20 FPS due to the use of motion blur, while some games look choppy at 24 FPS due to the lack of motion blur. So how do we simulate motion blur in these games? Well, run them at higher FPS (60, 70 or whatever).

Regarding V-Sync...I personally turn it off. For me games plays better without it.
Here's a really nice article on V-Sync (old but nice and informative): How VSync works, and why people loathe it - [H]ard|Forum

Re: Do you notice a difference above 24 fps?

application to application variance. and yes people can make out differences till 80 fps or so. 60 fps is common to make out.

the retinal concept of maxing out at 24 fps is . the retina or whatever is better...but some apps do stutter at certain fps and hence its easy for example , in this sucky app i can see 150 fps just cause it breaks down for 1/20th of a second at times making it easy for silly me to think this is the fps.

well, the human eye has a property known as persistence of vision.....the blur effect can be noticed if images are moving just above the limit of 1/16th of a second.....but technically, even motion pictures are moved at 20 fps...so, ONLY a GOOD eye can notice differences around this range......

Mind you, guys, almost all of us play games, and most of us are bespectacled, including me, so, we really do not have GOOD eyes, should I say, Practically, try this out, ask a non-gamer, healthy individual to give it a try, I know, it is very VERY difficult to notice much of a change, but yes, with constant observation from a proper individual(by eyes I mean), it is quite possible to notice SOME kind of a change.......at higher fps I mean...

Re: Do you notice a difference above 24 fps?

having spectacles doesn't mean ur eyes are fcekd ...its all in the energy projections in the eyes...that is also the reason why some can count the blades of a fast moving fan which appears blurry to almost all.

try this...use all ur concentration and concentrate on teh tyres of a fast moving car....like sit in a car and watch over ur left and see teh tyres of another car. after sometime even the bolts of the tyres will be clear...to count

I've already quoted and linked a research paper on "the limits of human vision in viewing computer generated imagery".
Don't know what is everyone still fussing about. Go read the paper boys.

Re: Do you notice a difference above 24 fps?

Standard human eye cannot tell the difference between 30 FPS and 60 FPS. But constant benchmarkers or geeks "may" notice some difference in smoothness while playing....

But to me if u r obsessed with the storyline/theme of the game(which forms the main part of the game) anything above 25 FPS is fine
