Re: The Definitive Android Thread

AFAIK, you need root only to install custom ROMs. To install factory firmware with an upgraded OS, you don't need to root.

Also, you don't need root to use your phone as a modem. If your phone supports wifi/usb tethering ( like my G2 does at stock ), then you just need the drivers to tether.

Re: The Definitive Android Thread

root is akin to administrator on your Windows PC. Someone who has access to everything and thus all the privileges.

Since the Android is based on Linux, which has some inherent limitations(+limitations imposed by manufacturers) when trying to access or modify some hardware related binaried/stuff/etc( but not limited to HW, some software portions are also protected this way), you cannot just go and modify it. This is also a protection from any accidental spill over to sensitive hardware ROMs.

This doesn't mean you cannot modify it. Afterall they must have modified the ROMs themselves during different iterations of the product.
To do so, all Unix systems rely on the superuser called Root.

Rooting your phone means you get access to almost everything, apart from things out of control of you e.g certain hardware has its own firmware, which might override what an Operating System dictates to you. Example, the saga of locked bootloaders. Even if you get root, you cannot just modify it and assume that all shall be fine. There is a protection firmware which checksums the bootloader binary and bricks ( extreme case ) it, in case checksum is very different from what its persistent internal database says.

PS: My understanding may be incorrect, feel free to correct.

Re: The Definitive Android Thread

Just flash stock firmware back onto the device to remove root privileges.

Re: The Definitive Android Thread

Using ODIN by keeping the zip file on my phone's HDD?? I should be making a backup of my stock firmware right?? Or is it available for download on XDA??

---------- Post added at 02:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:30 PM ----------

Ok i am back after reading some posts for noobs from XDA. Do tell me if what i am saying is correct or wrong.

For backing up the stock ROM we need to boot into recovery mode.
Make a nand back.

And when we want to go back to stock ROM and unroot it then we need to restore from the NAND backup. Correcto??

Asking this from a noob's point of view.
Between i recently moved from symbian to android by buying a Samsung Galaxy S2.
You don't need root for either of the functions.

Re: The Definitive Android Thread

I just got an android (not for myself), it's Samsung Nexus S (i9020) and was checking everything. I transferred all contacts from SIM to phone and when I tried to Join contacts, I get this error : The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. The contacts get joined but the process ends and had to force close. I didn't do any firmware updates or install any stuff. Just checking if everything is working fine.
