Dead Graphics Card with Working Fan, GPU Heatsink w/ Fan

Bookmark and Share

Hey,

Does anyone have a dead graphics card whose fan works? The thing is, I have a graphics card that a friend gave me. The fan apparently burnt out a while ago because there's just a mess of molten plastic where it is supposed to be. I can confirm that the card itself still works because it runs for a short while on just the heatsink alone.

It's an Nvidia GeForce 7200 GS or something like that, really low end. But you know, reuse, reduce and all that so if anyone has a dead graphics card whose fan works I'll buy it for a reasonable price.

I don't want something fancy, just the normal stuff. Some things:

1. The holes for the heat-sink pins are 60 mm apart, so I need a heatsink that'll fit like that. The fan, naturally, must be smaller to fit in the heat-sink.
2. The pins for the heat-sink _must_ be at the corners, there is no space to fit it on the card itself unless this is the case.

To illustrate, here is a picture of two heat-sinks for a GPU. The one on the left is fine, the one on the right is not.

Hey arjie, I remember noticing that you're from Madras in one of your older sale threads. There's a guy in Ritchie street, who has quite a collection of fans and might be able to help with the heat-sink too.

He's on the ground floor of Majestic Plaza, third or fourth shop on the right as soon as you enter. I can't remember the name of the place, he's hard to miss though, you'll see only fans in his window

Terrific! I'll go have a look as soon as this Diwali business gets over.

You are a hero. Thank you very much

To everyone else: You can still contact me if you have anything for two reasons: (a) I'm a lazy bugger. (b) The idea of reusing old stuff makes me feel good.

Hey I have a dead Graphics card due to capacitors and I have no time to replace them. It's fan wasn't functioning properly before that, so I had fixed a VCD player fan over it. It was running pretty fine with that till the capacitors started to leak. You can ask shops for VCD fans and you can mount it over your card, else PM me I will send you the card..

Go through the forums, you'll find a review for QQ vga cooler. you can order one from deal extreme, and fit it on the card. the fan can be connected externally and it fits any hole gap size. So you get a working fan and a good heatsink at the same time. should cost you around 700 or so shipped to your house from the site.

Thanks for the tip, JD, but at Rs. 700 I might as well buy a new PCI-e graphics card for a little more.

How would I do this? I have an old Pentium 3 heat-sink and I think the fan functions, but it doesn't look like it'd fit on the card at all!

That's good to hear, but I have no idea what a good price is. I think I'll go to that place on Ritchie Street and see how much they charge.
