Corsair Value Select DDR3 Ram Review
Is it only for the value oriented consumers? or it can take some beating from an overcloker? lets find that out...shall we?

About Author:
law student @ day...gamer @ night and full time overclocker....

Pros:
1.Cheap 2.Rock stable even under insane torture. 3.Can be overclocked to a considerable limit. 4.Works well with any board[no compatibility problem at all].

Cons:
1.None[from an consumers point of view] 2.tRCD needs to be higher than CL for stability when tweaking with timings[as far as i have seen].

Corsair Value Select DDR3 Ram Review

Corsair Value Select DDR3 Ram Review

Corsair is know to have manufactured rock solid memory for the enthusiasts and general public alike. In this article we will review one of its value offerings; the value select line of memory modules.

First let me give a little info about Corsair
Originally Posted by Wikipedia

In 2002, Corsair began shipping DRAM modules that were designed to appeal to computer enthusiasts, who were using them for overclocking. Since then, Corsair has continued to produce memory modules for PCs, and has added products in other PC component categories as well.
DDR3 Memory and its advantages over previous generation of memories

DDR3 SDRAM is the successor of DDR2 SDRAM, and it has the the ability to transfer at twice the data rate of DDR2 SDRAM(8 the speed of its internal memory arrays), enabling higher bandwidth or peak data rates. In addition, the DDR3 standard allows for chip capacities of up to 8 gigabits, thus enabling a memory module size of 16 gigabytes (using 16 chips).

Features (Source: Benchmark Reviews: Performance Computer Hardware Tests) :

  • Now supports a system level flight time compensation
  • Mirror-friendly DRAM pin out are now contained on-DIMM
  • CAS Write latency are now issued to each speed bin
  • Asynchronous reset function is available for the first time in SDRAM
  • I/O calibration engine monitors flight time and correction levels
  • Automatic data bus line read and write calibration
Improvements:
  • Higher bandwidth performance increase, up to 1600 MHz per spec
  • DIMM-terminated 'fly-by' command bus
  • Constructed with high-precision load line calibration resistors
  • Performance increase at low power input
  • Enhanced low power features conserve energy
  • Improved thermal design now operates DIMM cooler
Overall the package looks simple;single stick of 2GB module packed in one blister pack which takes quite an effort to open.

A close look at the package brings out the the following info :

Memory Type : DDR3
Speed Rating : PC3-10600 (1333MHz)
SPD Speed 1333MHz
SPD Voltage : 1.5
SPD Latency : 9-9-9-24

Test bed for torturing err...testing

before going any further: let me give you the info about the rig on which i will be testing the ram and its capabilities :
  • Phenom II X4 965BE @ 3.6GHZ[200x18/225x16]
  • Asus M4A785T-M
  • Corsair Value select DDR3 2GB single stick 1333MHZ @ 9-9-9-24-1T @ 1.5v
also please note this review is based only on this particular ram so no comparison will be drawn out.We will determine extent up-to which the memory can perform and measure the performance and bandwidth achieved at various speed.
the programs that will be used to measure them are as follows :

CPU-Z
MAXMEMM

Test results

After the system booted up,we ran a few test and tortured d ram a bit. Here are the results :
1333 MHz CL9

Nothing to say here...it did the job it was supposed to do...
next
1600MHz CL9

a little bump in the FSb....and it boots...and its stable @ 1.5V...also there is some increase in bandwidth.that's an improvement.
now the final frontier
1800 Mhz CL9

well....the value ram really can run @ 1800 CL9 plus it gives a nice bandwidth boost.

Conclusion

From the last page it is evident that although this ram is termed as "Value Select"..the stick can do some real impressive figures.Upon further Torturing
we managed to get this

1800MHZ CL7[7-9-7-20]! with a nice bandwidth boost.

So...at the end....i will suggest to anyone who want to go for an VFM DDR3 build....
a 5 STAR rating from me!

Re: Corsair Value Select DDR3 Ram Review

Very nice review Sumon
Its amazing how this memory scales up to 1800 Mhz with timings of 7-9-7-20. Makes my mushkins look like !@!@#

I have a question though - Was that bench score or stable memory speed / timing?

PS: Call me later I have a suggestion.

@Sumon: Awesome review!!!
If you had asked me I would've run some benches for you at stock speed, but no OC'ing due to my %#$!ty processor.
