Consulting Psychology. Hot or not?

Hello everyone. I just gave my 10th class board exams and now i am in the ultimate dilemma as every other 10thie out there. What to choose? The stream that i am leaning towards is Humanities. I don't have any interest in science or commerce. I posses great communication and verbal skills. With humanities, i hope to create a career in either English or Psychology with the latter being the top most priority. So i was hoping to get suggestions from the knowledgeable peeps here as to which option from the above to has more scope and what else i can opt for. I for one really like psychology.

Looking forward to your valuable suggestions.

Regards,
Bhushan Bhati

If you are confident about it ... you shouldn't look for suggestions / opinions ... these will only confuse things up ..

Re: Consulting Psychology. Hot or not?

Since you haven't specified the sub speciality, in general

Most important thing in Psychology is having an aptitude for it. Apart from communication skills you need lots of patience to actually hear someone on the same issues repeatedly.

Best is to get live experience, spend a day with a consultant psychologist as What's his daily routine like. In fact spending week with different consultants is a better idea. It's routinely practiced in USA before opting for certain career choices. There's a lot of difference when you actually have a hands on experience. You'll be in a better position to decide for yourself and guide others too.

Earning and opportunities both nationally and internationally are very rewarding at the moment, rest assured on that account.

Since counseling is the major mode of treatment, as you wouldn't be prescribing medications, some computer program or Robotic device jeopardizing your earnings needs to be carefully evaluated. I sincerely doubt such a thing in very near future. Even then psychological research is a never ending opportunity.

With people spending more time on Whatsapp, FB rather than actually conversing with each other & companies investing in psychological counseling for their professionals ; there's never going to be a dearth of opportunities for a good psychologist.

Well whatever you told is reassuring. I will certainly try to get a live experience. Let me get in touch with some psychologists. As for the patience and the aptitude, i can listen to people all day long without any problems. It's just that i like helping people with emotional problems and things like that so it will be a job for me that i love.

Yes, get some first hand experience and update the thread. Observe keenly on points which concerns you. Make notes, ask when required.

Rest assured on remuneration, I understand many of the popular psychologists charge per minute for listening !! Do you know all sports teams, including Cricket have their own dedicated psychologists? Some earn via video conferencing too. But remuneration should be the last in your check list, do what you're passionate about, earnings will surely follow.

You're welcome,
A small caution : you're going for first hand experience, do it in a dedicated and professional manner.
If his day starts at 7am & he works till 9pm - cover whole of his schedule. No part time business. He will not take you seriously, precisely that's how the American apprentice would do.
