The Complete N00bs Guide to Kernel

Introduction

This article will explain some of the most intriguing aspects of computer science theory; mostly it will explain about the very commonly heard beast called as "Kernel". This discussion will be Unix centric and most of the aspects will be highly specific to Linux. I will explain the terms, concepts, some beliefs, some ideas and general blabbering using my theatrical skills(I love this part ).

At times, you will find i have not used the most appropriate terms, but that is because, this will become too jargonistic and confusing, but still at place if you feel it needs to be tightened up or simplified, please do point it out.

@vijay, thanks man
@kido LOL
@cynic, man i guess little insight about how stuff work on OS should be for everyone in this place.
@stoney, there are games, but the issue is with DirectX and some open GL thing, but i guess that will resolve in some future.
@Aragorn, i think u r kiddin, u do understand stuff, u r quiet intelligent.
@rpm, sure dude, i will share anything i know
@Aragorn, No i dont think he need to know all this, he is aware of this stuff. There was someone else, who was confused abt shell script.

Re: Complete N00bs Guide to Kernel.

I know there are games for Linux (Tux Racer FTW! ) but until Steam (at least) goes over to the Linux camp, I'm sticking to Windows. My bad luck, I guess.

Re: Complete N00bs Guide to Kernel.

naah nothing like bad luck, we all are using vindoz. But There are ports of Q3 to linux, which runs pretty well. Then they have ported doom. THe game i play heroes has a port called Battle of wesnoth, infact 3dos release a totally different extenstion pack for heroes 3. there are many others, i guess DARKSTAR posted a list on the Open source for.

Re: Complete N00bs Guide to Kernel.

^^Yup, yup. I know all about those. I meant 'mainstream' games.

Honestly, the only Linux game I REALLY liked was BtRL, and I can't get that to work on 8.10 :/

Re: Complete N00bs Guide to Kernel.

For Shell Scripting - I must say the most useful book I found is -

UNIX® Shells by Example Fourth Edition By Ellie Quigley
This contains loads of examples and code in different shells. Superb for automation in the real sense.
