CodeWeavers Launches CrossOver Games 8.1 for Mac, Linux

Software allows Linux, Mac users to play Windows games

CodeWeavers, Inc. has reportedly released CrossOver Games 8.1 for both Mac and Linux. A general software consultancy, CodeWeavers focuses on the development of Wine, the core technology found in its CrossOver products.

CrossOver Games 8.1 for both Mac and Linux, a download-only product is available for $39.95. The product includes 12 months of free product support and software updates. CrossOver Games lets Windows games be played on Mac and Linux PCs without the need for a Windows operating system license.

The latest version of CrossOver Games is codenamed “Zombie Mallard.” It lets CrossOver customers play the sequel to “Left4Dead,” named “Left4Dead 2.” According to Jeremy White, president and CEO of CodeWeavers, the zombies were practically beating down CodeWeavers’ doors to run the sequel.

As part of the company’s efforts to arm the gaming populace with zombie killing tools, CodeWeavers will give away a fully loaded, custom built CodeWeavers gaming PC as part of a promotion. White said that Jeremy Newman, CodeWeavers’ system administrator, will build a new CodeWeavers gaming PC, with a quad-core CPU, dual graphics cards, 27-inch monitor with CrossOver Games installed. This gaming PC will be awarded to one winner this week.

CrossOver Games provide the capability to run popular games titles on Intel (News - Alert) OS X Mac or Linux PC. It comes with an easy to use, single click interface, which makes installing games simple and fast. Once installed, the game will integrate seamlessly into the desktop.

CodeWeavers aims to transform Mac OS X and Linux into Windows compatible operating systems. This is made possible by making it possible to use Windows software on Mac OS X and Linux. CrossOver Games is built on the latest versions of Wine, an open source software initiative that is systematically re-implementing the Win32 API under Unix. Wine makes it possible for PCs running Unix-based operating systems to run Windows applications.

they will be able to play alright, but the speed or the fps would nowhere be anywhere near to the windows platform this has been checked umpteen times.
But a nice way to promote windows I say, get the users to hook on to the games and then they buy a windows machine when they want more performance or are addicted !

The point is ... it costs almost the same as a windows OS. .... so it may be useful for Mac users but for linux ... its better to dual boot

CrossOver has been there since quite a while chaps.

Already used it, and Dual Booting is definitely a better option (BootCamp on a Mac, to use Windows).
But it gives very decent FPS, compared to Windows itself. Good enough for a casual gamer.
