Asus Unveils Hybrid Cooled GTX770 'Poseidon'
by ChironX 04-06-13

Taipei, June 4, 2013: In every year's Computex, the most anticipated presentation is usually of the home superstars, AsusTEK. This year is no different, and amidst a lot of interesting products, including two new members of their ROG Z87 Motherboard lineup (which we'll cover later ), they unveiled a new hybrid air/water cooled GPU, codenamed on the Greek Water God 'Poseidon', effectively continuing their innovation since the hybrid cooled Ares II launched last year. This year though, the ROG branding is going back to the green camp, as the Poseidon uses nvidia's recently launched GTX770, which is a modified/overclocked Kepler part, the GTX680.

The GeForce GTX 770 Poseidon makes use of the latest GK104-425 A2 core architecture that features 1536 cores, 128 TMUs and 32 ROPs. The GPU has a total of 2 GB GDDR5 vram that operates along a 256-bit wide interface. Although the clock speeds are not finalized for the new product, the card does make use of a non-reference PCB that packs a 6+2 Phase Digi+ VRM and is powered through dual 6-pin connectors.

Here is what Asus says officially about their newest ROG member -

ROG Poseidon graphics card with hybrid DirectCU H2O cooling

The new ROG Poseidon graphics card features an NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 700 Series GPU and a hybrid DirectCU H2O thermal design that supports both air and liquid cooling. Developed by ASUS, its CoolTech fan combines blower and axial fans in one design, forcing air in multiple directions over the heatsink to maximize heat dissipation. Liquid cooling reduces operating temperatures by up to 31 degrees Celsius for cooler running with even greater overclocking potential. ROG Poseidon also features a red pulsing ROG logo for a distinctive dash of style.”

The design makes for an interesting choice amongst gamers/enthusiasts. You can run it on air normally, but if you want that extra juice, you can run in in a hybrid air/water mode, connecting your water cooling loop in the card's inbuilt copper block. The card uses standard G1/4 threads so attaching fittings and pipes won't be an issue.

The ROG logo glows and pulsates while the card is in use. The heatsink is a large circular aluminum fin array in which a 80/92mm fan throws air.

We will expect it to land on a price range which is around $500, considering the normal GTX770 will retail for $400 and a good waterblock retails anywhere from $90-110.

Last but not the least, here's an image the folks at TechPowerUp took. Looks smexy, no?
