Asus Crosshair IV Formula Review

Introduction

Welcome to the performance review of the new 890 FX chipset and more importantly the Asus Crosshair IV Formula.

We have already done an extensive pictorial review of the board and today we are going to concentrate more on the performance of this board. We are going to compare it to the MSI GD 70 790 FX board. Now, as many of you know, the MSI GD70 was one of the best 790 FX based boards and was regularly counted amongst the big boys.

The main focus of this review is to take both these boards and put them through a series of tests to figure out if the 890 FX actually does a lot better than the previous generation, or can we stick on to our 790 FX boards for a while longer.

The tests that we will be reviewing today are as follows:
  1. 3D Mark 06 - Futuremark - Benchmarks - 3DMark06 - Introduction
  2. 3D Mark Vantage - Futuremark - Benchmarks - 3DMark Vantage - Introduction
  3. PC Mark Vantage - Futuremark - Benchmarks - PCMark Vantage - Introduction
  4. Crystal Mark - Crystal Dew World - Software - CrystalMark 2004R2
  5. Everest Memory Tests - EVEREST Ultimate Edition - PC Diagnostics | Lavalys.com

Apart from this we will also take a look at the overclocking potential of this board.

The test bench for this review will be:
  1. AMD 965 BE @ 3.4 Ghz (1.25V) and 4.00 Ghz (1.525V)] - AMD Phenom II Processors
  2. Memory: OCZ 1600 Mhz Platinum @ 1333Mhz 1.65V - OCZ DDR3 PC3-12800 Platinum AMD Edition OCZ Technology
  3. Thermal Paste: Arctic Cooling MX-3 - Arctic Cooling
  4. Motherboard: MSI GD70 790FX - MSI Global Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more
  5. Thermalright Venomous X - Ultimate CPU Cooling Solutions! USA
  6. Case - Coolermaster Storm Sniper Case - CM Storm

So without wasting any more time, lets head on to the first of our tests.

I guess this review sums it up for the new board, a very professional review written by you.
I must say I am pretty impressed with the OC capability of this. and I forgot or didnt read properly, was the venom used for cooling ? I know it must have, otherwise the temps would have hit the roof, but just confirming, what was the max temp on this running IBT on multiplier oc settings.

Max temp at 4.0 Ghz running IBT was around 56, ambient being 30.

^^ That is hot man, and also keeping to the point, what is the max that the 965 BE can be subjected to ? without it being fried in blue smoke.

62 degrees on the core temps. Dont worry it will throttle down much before you blow it.

And yes, the higher the ambient, the higher the max temps. So keep that in mind. If you are in an AC room, things will be much mroe under control. Now you see why I didn't push that board too far.

Re: Asus Crosshair IV Formula - Performance Review

I am not the least worried mate, not at all, just wanted to ask you the max limit before the thermal shutdown occurs, I was experimenting today and the cp reached 50 at boot into bios, when I somehow managed to raise the multi to reach 4.0 Ghz, but the video was giving me hell so couldnt reach windows. but the interesting part is, there was no ac in the room and the temp in the room was around 39 degrees, I was sweating like hell LOLz..
but now, I think I will be needing a new board, have had enough of this msi board.

Hey just remembered, are you getting the 890FX board by any chance ?
I maybe in line for your board if it can run 8 Gigs of RAM and as you are already using it, there will be no problem with me buying it.can you also arrange to help me in selling my ram if that is the case ?
