Conclusion

Conclusion

Well, what can I say that we have not already covered in the review. Performance wise, under similar clocks, the 890FX chipset is not going to give you anything extra over the older 790 FX boards. Every single test that we did give us equal or similar results. There was actually no difference between the two boards.

Taking that into account, Crosshair IV does manage to bring a lot to the table. To start with, the package and accessories as a whole is a lot more than we have seen on most performance boards. There is absolutely nothing that has been left out, save the really handy LCD poster. Secondly, the Crosshair IV has the capability to really help while overclocking and thats exactly why people would want to buy this board. And thirdly and most importantly, the board just looks sexy.

Finally, looking at the pros and cons:

Pros:
  • Great bundle as a whole
  • Build Quality
  • Well laid out bios and options
  • Over clocking software works well
  • Lots of new features like the "GO" button and the ROG connect
  • Superb Looking (Cant be said enough)
  • Lots of PWM fan connectors
  • Great Overclocker
Cons:
  • Does not have any extra performance over the 790 FX chipset
  • Missing LCD poster
  • Voltage and FSB fluctuations

To sum it up, if you are looking for a new AM3 board and like to overclock, then this board has it all. But if you are planning to move up from an existing 790FX board, I would say hold on.

We will look at retesting this board with a hexacore processor and we may see some differences between the two contestants at that time. Thank you for reading and have a nice day.

Re: Asus Crosshair IV Formula - Performance Review

I guess this review sums it up for the new board, a very professional review written by you.
I must say I am pretty impressed with the OC capability of this. and I forgot or didnt read properly, was the venom used for cooling ? I know it must have, otherwise the temps would have hit the roof, but just confirming, what was the max temp on this running IBT on multiplier oc settings.

Max temp at 4.0 Ghz running IBT was around 56, ambient being 30.

^^ That is hot man, and also keeping to the point, what is the max that the 965 BE can be subjected to ? without it being fried in blue smoke.

62 degrees on the core temps. Dont worry it will throttle down much before you blow it.

And yes, the higher the ambient, the higher the max temps. So keep that in mind. If you are in an AC room, things will be much mroe under control. Now you see why I didn't push that board too far.

Re: Asus Crosshair IV Formula - Performance Review

I am not the least worried mate, not at all, just wanted to ask you the max limit before the thermal shutdown occurs, I was experimenting today and the cp reached 50 at boot into bios, when I somehow managed to raise the multi to reach 4.0 Ghz, but the video was giving me hell so couldnt reach windows. but the interesting part is, there was no ac in the room and the temp in the room was around 39 degrees, I was sweating like hell LOLz..
but now, I think I will be needing a new board, have had enough of this msi board.

Hey just remembered, are you getting the 890FX board by any chance ?
I maybe in line for your board if it can run 8 Gigs of RAM and as you are already using it, there will be no problem with me buying it.can you also arrange to help me in selling my ram if that is the case ?
