Asus 4890 and Crossfire Performance Review

Introduction

With the recent announcement and price points of the new 5850 and 5870 series by ATI, I thought it made sense to re visit the current top of the line offering from ATI, the Radeon 4890. We will see some softening of the prices from here and these may become the best bang for the buck GPU's. We are also going to take a look at the crossfire performance and scaling on these cards.

The Radeon 4890 was announced earlier this year and came with a new core, the RV 790. As compared to the 4870's 750 Mhz core clock, the 4890 comes with a default speed of 850 on the core and 4975 Mhz on the memory.

Letís take a look at the specifications:

Asus Radeon 4890

Shader units: 800
ROPs: 16
GPU: RV790
Transistor count: 959M
Memory size: 1024 MB
Memory bus width: 256 bit
Core clock: 850 Mhz
Memory clock: 975 Mhz

Interesting card, but I would rather wait for the DX11 range to come up. Very interesting read Ashish. Thanks.

Ashish you have that near to pro touch of writing a review, I must admit that you write in a very fluid way.

Re: Asus 4890 and Crossfire Performance Review

Very nice review....

But doesn't it make sense in investing in a GTX260 .....which retails for around 11.5 k ...im sayin this coz most of the results are more or less or @ max of 10-15 % more the 260 ....

Also in crysis @ 1440x900 8x AA ...and everything Very High...i get constant 28-32 fps...

Re: Asus 4890 and Crossfire Performance Review

The next review will have the 58xx series and it will have the nvidia series as well. So hold up guys. This review was done to get two main things out of the way. One, will these cards be VFM after the launch of the 58xx series. And two, to get me going on a GPU review as I have barely touched on that topic earlier.

Re: Asus 4890 and Crossfire Performance Review

I think the most significant thing about this review was seeing how GPU scaling has matured
70-80% increases are so much more respectable than the piss-poor performances of yesteryear.

Re: Asus 4890 and Crossfire Performance Review

AGree with you there. Even Catalyst 9.7 did not have this kind of increase in crossfire. 9.9 has really changed it around.

Re: Asus 4890 and Crossfire Performance Review

Hey
Excellent review. Do you still have the 3dMark06 data with you.

I want to see the contribution of each component to the score.

I managed:
Overall : 19656 CPU : 3635 SM2 : 8245 HDR/SM3 : 11540
@ 1280 x 800.

With:
CPU: E7400@4.00 GHz@1.43V (381 Mhz x 10.5)
Motherboard: MSI P45 Platinum (AMI v1.06)
RAM: Corsair XMS2 CM2X2048-8500C5 @ 5-5-5-18
GPU: Powercolor 2 x HD4890 (1000/900[MEM/GPU])
