Asphalt 8 : Airborne Game Review

Asphalt 8: Airborne Review
Asphalt series is arguably the best arcade racing series in mobile gaming world. Asphalt 8: Airborne is the latest addition to the famous series.

Airborne is a great improvement over Asphalt 7: Heat in terms of graphics and gameplay. As the name suggests this game is all about going airborne. Jumping of ramps at high speed, performing stunts and wrecking opponent cars in mid-air these things define the game.

The game is available for both Android and IOS for just 1$.

Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ANMP.GloftA8HM
IOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/asph...610391947?mt=8

Let's find out if this game does justice to its predecessor Asphalt 7: Heat, which was a phenomenal game.

Graphics

Asphalt 8: Airborne is a visual masterpiece. After seeing Real Racing 3, I thought the graphics for a mobile racing game cannot be any better but Asphalt 8 proved me wrong. The graphics are absolutely stunning. Everything from the cars, tracks, environment, reflections, shadows everything is just awesome. Gameloft has been able to put console quality visuals for the small screen.

Airborne has gone to the next level with the graphic aspect of the game. The lens flare effect is just like that in battlefield 3 which looks absolutely brilliant. But sometimes the flare is just too much making the track nearly impossible to see thereby making you miss the ramps and even wreck your car. Motion blur also adds to the beauty of the graphics. Every little detail has been taken care of in the game. Driving in mountain tracks like Nevada makes your car dirty and this shows. Check out the dirt on the car in the pic below.

But this fantastic quality is not for every device. Playing at maximum settings is not possible on mid range devices. There is a lot of stuttering and frame drops. The game has graphic settings in the menu: very low, low, medium and high where only the high end devices do justice to the high settings, so you need to choose the settings accordingly. The motion blur and lens flare are not present in the medium-low settings but the game still looks gorgeous. The game struggles even on the Note II and Nexus 4 in the high settings. It is playable but there is occasional stuttering and frame rate drops especially when you use nitros. This might be due to the fact that this is still the early release and the performance might improve with future updates.

Airborne is a big game. You'll have to download a whopping 1.54GB to play this game. So make sure there is enough space in your device.

Gameplay

Asphalt series is undoubtedly the best arcade racing game series. The games are all about adrenaline. Surely they are not realistic but they don't disappoint and always keep you on the edge of the seat because of the fast paced aggressive actions.

Using nitros to blast past the opponents, drifting around sharp turns, wrecking the opponents, these things define Asphalt series. Airborne is exactly on the similar lines. The game has a new element which is performing high speed stunts in air. Hence the name Airborne.

The addition of aerial stunts has brought something different in the series. The two stunts here are: Flat Spin and Barrel Roll. You can see both of them in the trailer.

Barrel rolls are done on a special type of angled ramp and it requires perfection otherwise you'll end up wrecking your car.
To do a flat spin you need to drift just before going off a ramp. This also requires perfection but as the game progresses with enough practice you can easily perform these stunts.

Depending on the speed of your car and how perfectly you manage to execute these stunts the number of barrel rolls and flat spins are decided. If you manage to hit the ramp absolutely perfectly at high speed you can actually do 3-4 rolls or spins at the same time.
These stunts also put some juice in your nitro bar and we all know what role nitro plays in an Asphalt game.

You earn nitro by wrecking opponent cars, drifting through corners, performing aerial stunts or taking the nitro power-ups on the tracks. Nitro is the most important part of the game. I really missed the adrenaline mode of the Asphalt 7: Heat which is not present in Airborne.

Controls of the game are very responsive with the car responding perfectly to the touch for drifts etc. The only problem here is that the high end cars - Ferrari and Lamborghini are impossible to control when running at 400Kmph. You will hit each and every corner thereby wrecking the car million times. But with enough practice and skill this can be dealt with too.

Asphalt 8: Airborne is a big game. There are single player solo races, single player career, online multiplayer and local multiplayer over Wi-Fi. The single player consists of 8 seasons with 15 events in each season thereby making a total of 120 events. The game allows you to race using 47 officially licensed exotic cars on 9 different locations. Though it's almost impossible to unlock most of the cars (more on that later). The multiplayer is the best part of the game. Competing online against similar opponents is fun.

There are different race modes in the game:
  • Classic: A classic race with only one objective - take first place to win, first place gives you three stars, second place gives 2 stars and third place earns you one star.
  • Versus: Compete against one opponent, whoever wins gets three stars! The other gets a ticket to Loserville.
  • Elimination: There's a timer in the race, and every time the timer hits zero, the racer in the last place gets eliminated. Last one standing wins.
  • Gate Drift: There are several gates around the track that you must drift through to get points. No opponents only time limit. Beat the target score before time runs out.
  • Knockdown: Knockdown maximum number of racers you can in the given time. If racers are tied then there will be sudden death. First racer to knockdown a racer wins.
  • Infected: There's an infection on the track and patient zero is the last racer. Once infected you get a time limit but unlimited nitro and you can gain more time by running into other racers. Once the timer runs out, Ka-Boom!! Your car will be wrecked but it will cure the infection. First one to cross the finish line wins.

Every race you win will earn you five stars. Three stars are won if you finish first. The remaining two stars are given to you if you perform the asked activities like to perform a number of barrel rolls or flat spins or finish the race without wrecking your car etc.
These stars are then used to unlock new seasons and events.

The game is a bit difficult. Right from the first season you'll struggle to win races. The game has a lot of shortcuts or routes (for eg. in the location Iceland) but unlike Asphalt 7: Heat they are not shown on the map (in heat the shortcuts were shown in brown colour). So remembering the map is also an important factor to win races (helps in multiplayer too) because one wrong turn and you will be joining the pack last. This is kind of annoying because the AI in the career always chooses the shortest route. So remembering the maps is really necessary in this game.

What makes the game more difficult is that the upgrades and cars cost a lot. Cars and upgrades can be purchased by using credits which you earn after winning races and performing stunts. Where you earn about 1000 credits to win a race, the cars cost around 25-50 times more which is very annoying. The higher end cars like the Ferrari and Lamborghini are almost impossible to buy unless you play the games a million times or actualy buy credits (IAPs) because they cost a fortune.

Now we come to the important aspect of the game: in-app purchases. Since this is a paid game, I expected it to be fair in this department but Airborne fails to do so. The IAPs are just ridiculous. The in-app purchase become a necessity to buy top grade cars and upgrading the cars to their maximum since they cost so much. The IAPs here also spoil the fun just like they do for Real Racing 3.

Conclusion

Asphalt 8: Airborne is a great game. The visuals and gameplay are brilliant. The game gives an exhilarating racing experience. The soundtrack is really immersive and they have split it into genres - Rock, Bass and Electronic. Yes!! The game is NOT perfect. It has it's shortcomes. But still, overall this is a great looking game and asphalt fans won't be disappointed.
The game costs just a dollar so it's definitely worth a try.

Pros:
  • The visuals and gameplay are absolutely stunning.
  • The career mode is big and has lots of events to participate in.
  • High speed aerial stunts are a welcome addition to the series.
  • Online and Local multiplayer
Cons:
  • Difficulty level is on the higher side.
  • Controlling the top end cars is very difficult making it almost impossible to win.
  • Cars and upgrades are too expensive.
  • IAPs are just ridiculous considering the fact that this is not a freemium game and costs a dollar.

Rating: 7/10

Great review as always!
One thing that's alarming is these new IAPs that are poping up in every good game out there, and destroying the experience.
The last being the Plants vs Zombies 2. Thank you EA for ruining even Asphalt!

You mean Gameloft?
What bothers me is that this is not a freemium game like RR3 so the IAPs should not be so ridiculous.
5000rs for the car pack? Are you serious?

No i really meant EA. They're responsible to promote these so called BS "in-game microtransactions" in almost every game made by them. This led to Ubisoft then gracing this concept (many other later), and then among biggest mobile devs, Gameloft.
I'm really sadened and also furious for the fact that they totally destroyed PvZ, which was one of my fav indie titles, after they bought Popcap

And regarding Asphalt 8, this is more ripoff.
We are already paying you for your product. Our hard earned money is already getting deposited in your pockets, then why should we pay again?
Please don't punish us for being legit.

Asphalt 8 is one of them.. It's really difficult.. even the first season.. It's impossible to beat this game..
I think Gameloft did this on purpose. So that we are left with no option other than buy credits..

If this continues, no doubt Gameloft will lose (or already have lost) a lot of hardcore Asphalt fans.
