Apple Calls for an Early Ban on Samsung Galaxy S III, Isn't Amused by S Voice

Apple calls for an early ban on Samsung Galaxy S III, isn't amused by S Voice

Samsung might have been right when it said lawyers didn't design the Galaxy S III, because it's in legal hot water again. Apple has moved to add the new Android 4.0 flagship to the same request for a preliminary US ban that would stop the Galaxy Nexus. Cupertino believes the Galaxy S III violates at least two patents, one the data tapping patent that's also being leveled against HTC and the other a unified search patent that covers Siri; not surprisingly, Apple isn't keen on that strangely recognizable S Voice interface. A hearing was already scheduled for June 7th and is now taking on a new sense of urgency, at least in Apple's mind: it's arguing that the rumored nine million pre-orders (still unconfirmed) are evidence of the potential damage if the US court lets the dispute slide. Samsung has already said that the injunction call won't affect its rapidly approaching US launches. The company had better hope it's right, or it risks disappointing a lot of early pre-order customers.

Re: Apple Calls for an Early Ban on Samsung Galaxy S III, Isn't Amused by S Voice

What I said in the other thread, stop the other companies from making and selling better devices !!
I think that is the best policy, co they can't let go of the promise ( not confirmed ) by Jobs that any screen above 3.5" is useless to use !! by one hand...

Manish bhai, you are a reputed member over here.
Most of your replies are helpful but please stop showing your Apple hate.
I know every member has its own views and a forum is a place to discus for everyone, but you suddenly jump onto every Apple thread and post in very offensive manner.
Although whatever you post is 100% correct but don't give an impression that you are posting it due to personal hatred. It somehow decreases the value of that fact.

Now you may not like a forum noob suggesting you something.

^^ He's biased. Him and Rajapraveen are programmed to bash Apple at every chance they get.

Anyway, there are two sides to a story.

Apple has every right to sue, since they own the patents for Siri, and S Voice has done nothing except mimic Siri.

Re: Apple Calls for an Early Ban on Samsung Galaxy S III, Isn't Amused by S Voice

then why not sue micromax??? it also came out with Aisha an app that functions like siri . I feel instead of filing cases apple should focus their energy more on bringing out a device with a functionality better than siri if they want to show their superiority. such Idiotic moves just shows that they dont have it in them to do better than others

Firm claims Apple’s Siri, Google devices violate 1998 speech patent

Firm claims Apple’s Siri, Google devices violate 1998 speech patent

In a sweeping lawsuit, a Colorado shell company is suing the entire mobile phone industry over a patent for inventions where “Oral input is used to control a digital computer.”

The lawsuit singles out Apple’s iPhone 4S and its Siri voice assistant as well as a range of phone makers like Samsung and Sony that use Google Voice Actions technology. The claim also names Research In Motion for BlackBerry Voice commands and Microsoft for Microsoft Speech Commands.

Records show that the patent was issued to Jerry Potter in 1998. Last year, Potter assigned the patent to a Texas shell company which in turn assigned it to a Colorado shell company called Potter Voice LLC that is suing the phone makers.

It’s unclear if Potter was actually a pioneering inventor of voice technology or whether the patent is another in a series of dubious patents that has been driving a never-ending series of court fights in the mobile industry. Patent standards became particularly lax in the late 1990′s as the Patent Office issued thousands of “business method” patents that have subsequently attracted criticism from law makers and the Supreme Court.

The abstract of US patent 5729659 says:

Oral input is used to control a digital computer. Associative searching techniques of tabular data structures are used in conjunction with rules and conventions derived from natural language to facilitate the use of oral input. The method is capable of being implemented in connection with conventional sequential computers, associative single-instruction multiple data computers and parallel processors.

Patents like these have become the fuel of global litigation engulfing the smartphone industry. In some cases, the phone makers buy the patents themselves. Other times, private hedge funds form shell companies that don’t produce anything but do make a business of suing companies that do — a practice known as trolling.

The Supreme Court has responded to the patent problem in part by tightening the definition of “obvious” and Congress last year passed patent legislation that makes it easier to attack suspect patents (the law doesn’t apply to older patents).

Yesterday, Apple CEO Tim Cook complained about the ceaseless patent battles, saying “I’ve always hated litigation .. We just want people to invent their own stuff.”

Siri is a spin-out from the SRI International Artificial Intelligence Center, and is an offshoot of the DARPA-funded CALO project.

Siri was originally introduced as an iOS application available in the App Store by Siri, Inc. Siri, Inc. was acquired by Apple on April 28, 2010.[3] Siri, Inc. had announced that their software would be available for BlackBerry and for Android-powered phones, but all development efforts for non-Apple platforms were cancelled after the acquisition by Apple

Whatever said and done, Patent troll companies are the worst.

They don't innovate. They don't create squat, but due to the broken patent system in USA, they earn millions.

Disgrace.

Head To Head: Siri Vs. Google Voice Actions

Head To Head: Siri Vs. Google Voice Actions

When you first begin using Siri it’s not entirely clear what you can do with it. (It’s also not clear how to access it.) Yesterday Danny wrote up some initial thoughts/criticisms of the Siri local search experience. In this piece I’m going to offer some general thoughts comparing Siri (on an iPhone 4S) with Google Voice Actions on my current phone (Android EVO) as well as some head to head examples of queries on both.

Siri Leans on Google
If you say to Siri, “What can I ask you?” it returns a list of the categories of things it can do. However when I rephrased the question slightly and asked “What can I do with Siri,” it sent me to a Google search result.

Indeed, Siri is not a Google killer. It relies heavily on Google search for things it can’t do or answer. For many users Siri may become the voice front end to Google search on the iPhone 4S and beyond. We may see Google’s query volume on the iPhone increase and not decrease accordingly. (The conventional wisdom is that Siri is a direct threat to Google but the reality is somewhat more nuanced — so to speak.)

What Can You Do with Siri?
In less than a handful of days since the first demo phones were distributed there are already hundreds (maybe even thousands) of articles discussing and evaluating Siri’s capabilities. But most iPhone 4S owners will need to play with Siri for a few days to understand how best to use it. Here are the kinds of things you can do with Siri:

Initiate calls
Find friends/family members (relies on find my friends account)
Play music
Send texts/emails
Create notes
Create calendar entries
Set alarms
Get directions
Get answers to factual questions
Search the internet

Re: Apple Calls for an Early Ban on Samsung Galaxy S III, Isn't Amused by S Voice

When Apple have bought it from Siri Inc. and someone else uses similar technology, it's obvious that Apple company gets hurt.

For head to head comparison,
I guess Apple has clearly mentioned that Siri is in beta phase in iOS 5.

Anyways such discussions are never ending.
