Hadoop is good but will take some time to mature.
What about object based databases?

Why Signops?
Don't worry it will take next 15 years for relational dbs to vanish.
Hadoop et all are essentially distributed fs+distributed storage which do the same thing by break the transactions.

Loads of SMBs will still need db just in order of TB i guess, where RDBs do just fine .

Was just kidding.

15 years is a lot of time, maybe 10 or less.

Re: Anti-database movement gains steam.

HALT. rdb is not gonna go fly outta the shelves. atleast nto outta trillions of lines of code.

today' current systems are going to be tommorow' antique systems, which will need maintaining. maintaining tricky, useless, inefficient queries. need for strong expertise right there. think on the lines of mainframe.

business logic implementations don't die.

in terms of contemporary technologies, yes. something may replace rdb. the major deciding factor would be as to what helps data centers and servers go greener.

Re: Anti-database movement gains steam.

Ah yes true. Most companies still use Oracle 9i. If it runs, let it run.

Re: Anti-database movement gains steam.

A very interesting and knowledgeable read there in the link, what this NoSQL is doing is what MySql did when it gained momentum. imo
Relational dbs ftw.
I would like to read more on this so am asking db experts here to provide me links..
