AMD Phenom II Six Core 1100T Thuban vs i7 920 Review

Around Eight months ago AMD introduced their first Phenom II X6 processor 1090T. To know more about the 890FX/GX chipset and architecture that goes best with X6 please refer to our older review of 1090T, here. Today they are launching their new flagship X6 Processor AMD 1100T Black Edition with a 100Mhz speed bump replacing 1090T from the top. Good news for AMD loyalist is that its launching at almost the same price point of 1090T and in preparation of this launch, AMD has already dropped prices for 1090T in the last few weeks. So good news all around.

The new Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition that we are benchmarking today operates at 3.3GHz with a 16.5x clock multiplier (200Mhz slower than the 970) but with a turbo speed of 3.7Ghz which should make non-overclockers very happy because when using single thread applications it means free performance. This new Phenom is based on the new new Thuban architecture and has the same features like the 1090T with 6MB L3 cache, each core having its own dedicated 512KB of L2 cache (3MB total L2 cache), its also a Black Edition processor, which means the CPU multiplier is unlocked, making it easier to overclock, especially in systems that have trouble raising the reference clock speed that affects other components like Memory. In AMD's word - "There are faster processors for lighter-threaded workloads like the PII X4 970… but for those who need the processing bandwidth and multi-tasking capability of a true 6-core, the Phenom II X6 is an affordable and powerful option."

Though all our other AMD review chip come in a bare state, but 1100T comes in a nice small green protective case which keeps the CPU safe from bumps and bruises. Ofcourse when you purchase it from the market it would still come in a proper box and stock heatsink.
