Amazon Testing Drone Delivery System - Will Flipkart Follow?

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos revealed Sunday that his company is looking to the future with plans to use "octocopter" mini-drones to fly small packages weighing upto 2.3 kilograms to consumers in just 30 minutes. Bezos estimated that Amazon "Prime Air" would be up and running within four to five years.

A demo video (shown above) showed the tiny robotic devices picking up packages in small yellow buckets from Amazon's fulfillment centers and then whizzing through the air to deliver the items to customers just 30 minutes after they made their purchase on Amazon.com.
"I know this looks like science fiction. It's not," Bezos told CBS television's "60 Minutes" program."We can do half-hour delivery... and we can carry objects, we think, up to five pounds (2.3 kilograms), which covers 86 percent of the items that we deliver."

The mini-drones are powered by electric motors and could cover areas within a 16-kilometer and operate autonomously based GPS coordinates transmitted to them. 16 km may seem small for some of India's larger cities, but remember these will travel in a straight line and not go roundabout which increases distance.

"It's very green, it's better than driving trucks around," said Bezos. Amazon said the octocopters would be "ready to enter commercial operations as soon as the necessary regulations are in place," noting that the Federal Aviation Administration was actively working on rules for unmanned aerial vehicles.

Amazons ambitious project still requires additional safety testing and federal approval, but Bezos projected a more optimistic timeline, saying the FAA's rules could be in place as early as 2015 and that Amazon Prime Air would be ready at that time.

If the project is a success then other retailers including those in India might follow and soon we might have quite a few small flying craft delivering pizzas or mobile phones to peoples homes.

This is going to take a long time, maybe 5 to six years and I think this will not work on a large scale.

What if the drone drops the stuff right 'on' you instead of 'at your doorstep'?

Yes, that is a concern and challenge to be addressed. However the technology to recognise humans, dogs, cats and other objects exists. Even face recognition exists to some extent so its possible the drone will ask for you and personally deliver the package to you. (though COD will be difficult). It will also have to avoid cables, electricity lines antennas and things like that so there are many technological challenges to overcome.h

This will probably work best for independent homes as there is not enough space in apartment balconies for the drone to do a safe drop off.

What happens if drone drops the package on the way?

What happens if we house arrest the drone?

Will they have a policy that if order is not arrived on time, we shall take the drone?

Here in india? Naah. People here will throw stones at the UAV and then will take the courier

Jokes apart: I don't think in a country like India this would be possible anytime soon.
First of all, the intial high investment cost.
Retailers here already having a hard time.
And then, there's various insecurities with the packages, including weather conditions.
You don't want a 40k phone to be sent away like this, or a 70k laptop.

But elimitating all these, if they pull through, then it's gonna be just massive

It can fly in all weather conditions and even if a couple of rotors fail. No petrol, you just recharge it with solar power.

The initial costs could be higher but the recurring costs are lower. For instance you dont have to pay it any salary or pension. It works on Sundays without complaint and It doesnt get stuck in traffic jams so it can deliver a lot more packages per day.

But we do need specialised technicians won't we?
Even on a holiday
Drones going malfunctions, haywire, going off grid, etc.
But hey, this is quite a great innovation, though i hate for the fact that many people would lose their jobs.

Having said that, if this happens, i'll most probably sit on my roof with a shotgun and get loads of free $#!T

The whole idea is great but delivering using the octocopters can be really time consuming. Since it always travels in a straight line, it cannot go multiple places in a single trip. So they will have to use so many of these things. I would hate to see these fly above me. What if they drop the package on my head?
They can kill birds too.. Plus how will this thing deliver the package to someone living in a building? GPS won't help you there.
And you say there won't be any traffic. If all the retailers start using the octocopters we can expect to see a sky beyblade fight very soon

The drones are powered by electric motors and solid state electronics (with backups) which rarely need servicing. They dont require regular checks like petrol or gas turbine engines. The modular components can easily be checked occasionally by technical personnel or other drones (yes the technology is there).

I dont think you have access to a shotgun. But if you do theres nothing stopping you from shooting the current delivery boy either.

I think you'll need an assault rifle or a sniper. Shotguns don't have that kind of range.

But hey, it's a lot easier to hide robbing a UAV, than hiding a dead body (insert Castle & Beckett reference here)

But seriously, if those things need much less maintainance like you said, then it's a boon for sure

This is news to me and completely opposite to what I had learned. Can you tell me which shotgun has a range longer than assault rifles and what is its range in meters?
